Note: These reviews were of previous single volume editions.

Michael Black is looking forward to getting his brown belt, something he has worked hard to achieve. With a past filled with loss and pain and with no family of his own, he’s tired of playing the field and longs to find someone to love. Although he entertains thoughts of a relationship with his Sensei Ichiro, he believes that his crush is unrequited so he doesn’t pursuit it and only takes part in meaningless hook-ups.

Then one night while at the dojo he encounters the stranger that will change his life. The stranger turns out to be Ichiro’s cousin, Kiyoshi. Suddenly drawn to the lithe, handsome stranger Michael agrees to help out his sensei in keeping Kiyoshi safe while he is visiting. However, Michael can’t help but to act on his attraction and ends up not only opening his door to the stranger but also opening his heart.

I had met Michael and Kiyoshi previously when I read The Italian Connection 2 and I was looking forward to reading their story. This is the second set of stories I have read from Alex A. Akira and it was everything I’ve come to expect from him. The author has the ability to draw me into the story from the very beginning keeping me riveted throughout and then leaving me wanting more from these characters when the story has reached its end. I especially enjoy the complexity of his characters, the way he brings action-packed scenes to the page and the sizzling-hot sex scenes he infuses with emotions.

As for this set of characters, I have to say that I loved Kiyoshi’s vulnerability and admired how far he’d come in life. And Michael? Well he was adorable as he constantly fought his attraction to Kiyoshi.

The romance was another element I enjoyed. I loved how they got together and how their connection grew as the story progressed. Their doubts and hesitations felt real and even though I am not usually a fan of the whole insta-love scenario, I believe it fits this story well. For me, the best part of this story and its characters was how Michael and Kiyoshi both longed to be loved and how fiercely attracted to each other they were.

I could tell you more, but the fun was in discovering the details as they were revealed.

Dragon and Crow, Volume 2 picks up right where Dojo Boys: Dragon & Crow, Volume 1 left off. Michael finds himself immerse in his lover’s latest mission where he encounters a salacious guy, a high school girlfriend, a handsome operative from his lover’s organization and his lover’s ex. He is man-handled, beat up and injured. He is not having the best of days, but his spirits are kept high by thoughts of his lover and the connection they share. Then all hell breaks loose and Michael finds himself facing his biggest nightmare–losing the man he loves.

As with the previous installment, I enjoyed this story from beginning to end. I found myself gripping my tablet during the action packed scenes and biting my lip during the sizzling-hot sex scenes.

In this installment, we also get to see a more vulnerable side to Ichiro, Kiyoshi’s cousin, and a stronger cunning side to Kiyoshi. That right there is what reinforces my admiration for Alex A. Akira’s writing–his ability to bring to life the characters in his stories by peeling back layer after layer of the characters’ personality. That, combined with a riveting storyline and fast paced action scenes, is what truly kept me reading all through the night.

I enjoyed how Michael managed to hold his own under the circumstances that he was facing, his unending loyalty to Kiyoshi and how his emotions spilled out on the page. He felt real, much more than in the previous volume. Kiyoshi, on the other hand, was resilient in his determination to put this mission to rest. He was strong, hard edged and completely sexy in his pursuit of Michael. I loved this side of him. Yes, I liked his vulnerable, sweet side and his rougher side too, but this devil may care, seductive, controlling side gave him an air of unavailability that I enjoyed very much. Who knew?! 😀

Dojo Boys: Dragon & Crow Volume 2 is a great follow-up book that will leave you wanting more from Michael and his sexy operative.  There’s not much more I can say without giving the little treasures of the story away since I loved it all, so I’ll just shut up now and read some of the highlighted text on my Kindle. Yes, yes, I’m going back in there, you know, to refresh my memory and all that. 😉

All in all, a great action-packed romance with intriguing characters and a riveting storyline.

Excerpt

D-&-C-VOL-1-800X1200-COVERMichael groped for the light switch, a smile of triumph playing at his lips. Damn, I did it! I beat him! Flicking the switch, he turned, eager to view his skilled opponent and to bask in the accolades that he was sure to receive from Sensei Kimura.

His triumph descended to dismay in a flash. Who the hell is this?

A slight figure lay crumpled at the center of the practice room. Cautiously approaching the limp form, Michael’s heart sank even further. Lying unconscious on the gleaming bamboo floor was a Japanese boy. He looked to be about five-foot-seven, was very pale, and quite young.

“A kid? I beat up a kid?” Quickening his pace, Michael knelt beside the slim figure. Jesus, he’s like fourteen, fifteen? Beautiful. He looks like Ichiro. Better, actually, Michael admitted, surprised at his internal betrayal of his long-held crush on his sensei. He continued to stare down at the slight, fragile boy, eyeing the long blue-black hair that trailed sensuously around the figure’s unfamiliar gray karategi.

Who the hell is he? Why would they have me beat up a kid for my test? Puzzled, he glanced around the room, noting that he and the boy were alone. Ignoring his impending alarm, he gazed back to the unconscious figure.

D&C-VOL-2-800X1200-COVERThe youth’s face was truly beautiful. Michael’s inner artist drank in the smooth, pearly skin, the long, sooty lashes, and the pale apricot color blushed across the boy’s delicate cheekbones. God… An aching hunger preceded the lurch of Michael’s cock, which nudged his lower abdomen telegraphing its interest. Get it together. He’s like … twelve! Suddenly realizing that the boy showed no sign of regaining consciousness, Michael snapped from his trance and shook his opponent’s shoulder.

“Hey!” He leaned over the placid body, hand stretching toward the longish neck for a pulse. The telltale thump throbbed beneath his fingers, but his proximity to the boy’s face had him pausing to stare at the youth’s sculpted lips. Christ, get away from him before you do something you’ll regret. Frowning, he started to shift upright when a relentless grip clutched his hair.

Caught off guard, Michael fumbled helplessly as his head was tugged abruptly toward the face beneath him. The beautiful mouth claimed his lips, stealing his breath and muffling his gasp as a hot tongue invaded his mouth. The agile member eagerly caressed its counterpart, igniting Michael’s senses. The tantalizing scent of ripe apricots surrounded him, dizzying him with sensual promises, and urging him to surrender.

Dojo Boys: The Italian Connection Volume Two by Alex A. Akira

Synopsis: Volume II of this swiftly paced romantic Yaoi novel finds Tanaka operative Philippe Michael Ponty fleeing his new lover only to run into his old nemesis Jun Watanabe.

Forced to comply with a kidnapping, he finds himself in the hands of the Yakuza, drugged and expected to perform sexual favors as Jun seeks his revenge.

Yoshiro Tanaka and Michael Black (Dojo Boys: Dragon & Crow) arrive from Japan to coordinate a rescue attempt and call upon record executive Julian Romano and musician Tommy Sear for help.

Seedy motels, jealous ex lovers, violent fighting, gunfire, multiple misunderstandings, a Japanese techno club and a memorable trip to Argentina make for another madcap adventure in this pulp Yaoi series of Dojo Boys finding true love.

Review: A great action-filled follow-up story about loyalty, self-acceptance and love.

Dojo Boys: The Italian Connection Volume Two picks up right where the previous volume left off. Phillipe is on the run from Julian after a huge misunderstanding and finds himself doubting his self-worth and vowing to forget Julian and his new found feelings for him. While in the airport departing for his next mission he is kidnapped by Jun Watanabe who has escaped from prison. Phillipe is determined to keep his friends safe and free himself once and for all of Jun, even if he has to do it alone. Little does he know that reinforcements are just around the corner in the form of Tanaka, his boss,  and Michael, his friend and co-worker, among others. The series of events that follow involve a whole new set of characters, both of the good kind and the horrible kind. All these events and the emotions that were brought forward eventually lead Phillipe on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance resulting in what he has longed for since he can remember – a family and the man he loves.

Once again Alex A. Akira has brought forward an amazing story. I found myself tapping the hell out of my tablet trying to keep up with the action and the emotions brought to the page and I enjoyed it throughly. From the kicks and head-butts to the gunshots and arrests, this story was action packed from beginning to end. But it was the emotions that got to me. From desperation and disgust to anguish and despair, I felt them all. Which only made Phillipe more dear to me. I wanted to protect him, console him and tell him that he was loved.

The writing was excellent with the right balance of action scenes and emotional drama to keep me interested throughout. The characters once more were wonderful and added to the story appropriately. Even Jun and his crew I enjoyed. Not in a good way, since I mostly wanted to kill them all, but his presence brought a lot more of Phillipe to the surface and THAT I enjoyed very much. I loved to see how Phillipe and Julian developed throughout the story, which helped me connect to them more. This in turn increased the believability of their getting together in my eyes.

Another fact that made it real were Phillip’s doubts about this new connection he found with Julian. I liked that they had to fight their own demons and other obstacles thrown at them to be able to get together. It also helped that the author expressed so clearly their longing and their need to be with each other. Their pain while apart, especially Phillipe’s, was overwhelming at times. I had to believe in their happily ever after, I just had to. When they got together in the end I cried with them and found myself sighing in relief for them too.

I thoroughly enjoyed this volume and I would love to read more about how Phillipe and Julian are working out. I am also interested in reading more from Tommy. He was an adorable character to get to know and his story would be a joy to read.

I would like to thank the author for giving me the opportunity to read and review this title in exchange of my honest opinion.

Dojo Boys: The Italian Connection Volume One by Alex A. Akira

Dojo Boys: The Italian Connection Volume One (Dojo Boys #3)Rating: 4 stars

Published: November 24, 2012

Available at: Amazon

Synopsis: This swiftly-paced two-volume romantic Yaoi love story tells the tale of the multi-talented thief/dancer Philippe Michael Ponty. First introduced in Dojo Boys: Dragon & Crow Volume II, the now twenty-two year old platinum haired, petite Adonis struggles to make a home for himself in America.

Volume I finds Philip settling in Connecticut in disguise, as he doesn’t want to draw too much attention to his true line of work. Despite his caution, he meets and befriends a local rock musician, Tommy Sear, who despairs of ever having his band make it.

Quickly smitten by the dark-haired, shy Asian male that is Philip, Tommy seeks to make the young man his, but Philip doesn’t believe in love; besides, he has a very real problem. He can’t seem to get the victim of his last burglary, a green-eyed, virile Italian male… out of his mind.

With Philip’s encouragement, Tommy renews his efforts to get his band, Sear, a record deal. He makes a demo and shortly after a scout contacts him, from Italy no less. The Italian scout is coming to America hear them play in the hopes of signing Sear to the much sought-after label, Romano Studios.

But Tommy has a secret and he’s afraid that without Philip’s help, they may not get the deal.

Review: A great story of new beginnings, old insecurities and new found connections.

The story starts out with Phillipe Michael Ponty in the process of stealing from a handsome stranger. Phillipe is a 22-year old thief from Japan who prides himself on his good work. But so overwhelming is the instant attraction he feels towards this man that he does something that he has never done before – he kisses the stranger. Little does he know how much that kiss will come to mean to him.

Julian Romano is a part owner of Romano Records and is in Italy getting over a nasty break-up. He awakens to find that his house is being burglarized. He follows the perpetrator as he is making his escape and is instantly distracted by a pair of “plump, rosy lips”.  Suddenly he is being kissed and hit on the head. After the incident, Julian vows to return to his work and to the States to focus on his business. He is not looking for a relationship. But that kiss continues to hunt him.

Phillipe is a talented young man who has had a rough life and is trying to make a life for himself now that he has moved to the States. The problem is that throughout his life he has had many identities – a singer, a rent boy, a dancer and a thief – but he has never been himself. All he wants is to be accepted and loved and to have friends and be part of a family. Once in Connecticut he meets Gabriella and her daughter Zoe. Over time they develop a nice friendship and through Gabriella, Phillipe meets Gregori, one of her brothers, and Tommy. It is because of Tommy and through an interesting set of events that he started that Phillipe reunites with Julian.

I have to congratulate the author, Alex A. Akira, for a wonderful story and such a set of great characters. The main characters were complex and interesting and learning more about them is what kept me reading through the night. I wanted to know when they where going to meet again and how that would be played out. The secondary characters were enjoyable as well. They all added to the story. From Gabriella getting it into her head that Phillipe would be perfect for Julian to Tommy and his crush on Phillipe.

The writing was very good. I liked the range of emotions that were brought to the page and the interactions between the characters. Although this is categorized as a romance and there were declarations of love, for me this volume is more about Phillipe and Julian’s story as individuals and their interactions with their inner circle than the romance, which helped me overlook the “insta-love” feel towards the end of the book. The emotions expressed by these characters where brought to the page well and at the right time, which helped me connect to them fully and kept my interest in how their relationship would come about. Their attraction was very palpable and I have to say that it was off-the-charts HOT. You could feel the hesitation, the lust and the longing. Just that one scene was awesome!

This is my first Yaoi story and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. There is more to this story than what I expressed here, but I could not do it without giving too much away. So I encourage you to read the excerpt, which was what attracted me to the story in the first place.

I would like to extend my appreciation to the author for giving me the opportunity to read and review this title in exchange of my honest opinion.

Enjoy the following excerpt from Dojo Boys: The Italian Connection Volume I

Julian Romano awoke abruptly from his deep sleep. Fully alert, he gazed around the room trying to ascertain what had disturbed him. Swinging his legs down from the divan, he rose to his feet in a single movement, his gut instinct guiding him to the door. Grasping its knob, he eased it open and peered out into the hallway. His jaw tightened when he spied the stealthy, black- clad figure making its way to the door at the opposite end of the corridor. Shit! He was being burgled. Wrong night, little thief, he thought, noting the intruder’s diminutive size.

After having had a rather hellish day, he’d returned home earlier than planned, mostly due to the disintegration of the affair in which he’d been involved for the past two months. The breakup had been messy…too messy… for his taste, with objects being thrown at him… for chrissakes

The burglary was the final straw in a week of unpleasant days that had fatigued him both mentally and physically, thus the collapse to his couch. And now this? He raked his unruly curls in irritation. Wrong house, wrong day, buddy, he reiterated mentally, feeling adrenaline pump through his body as he readied for the confrontation.

He watched the intruder creep through the door of the upstairs drawing room and carefully shut it behind him. Julian waited a minute, then followed. Reaching the door himself, he paused, one hand on its knob, listening for an accomplice. Hearing nothing, he eased the door open, rewarded by the sight of the thief’s back.

Startled, he stared at the sleek, black-clad figure… Jeez, tiny thief… Is it a child? No, he realized in shock, it’s a girl! A small muscular… woman. Studying the slim, well proportioned form, he paused, surprised to feel a tightening in his groin as he spied the taut, muscular behind. Pipe down, he murmured to himself, it’s a woman for chrissakes… His eyes narrowed, a sudden tension in the girl’s body alerting him of her intent to make a break for it.

“Stop right there, turn around,” he called, his voice insinuating the “or else.”

The figure stiffened, and Julian realized that he had no idea if she was armed. Hmm, if she planned to make a break for it, she probably isn’t… From what he could see, the sleek catsuit made it impossible to conceal a weapon. At least not a gun… He considered the possibly of a knife, causing a stream of Sayoc Kali defense postures to appear in his mind’s eye. Confident that he had the upper hand he spoke again.

“Don’t even think about it… I have a weapon trained on you.” Swiftly crossing the space he stopped about two feet behind her. “Turn around… slowly.”

The figure complied, raising its arms. As she turned, Julian noted the suit extended to cover her head and most of her face. Dark eyes caught his fleetingly before they were cast down. Jeez, she’s tiny, Julian thought, eyes snaking over her small bustline and lithe, almost delicate frame. Must be after jewelry, can’t see this one carrying anything larger… Before he thought, he snorted dismissively.

“What are you… five feet tall? What’s a woman your size doing prowling around stealing other people’s possessions? Are you alone? Do you have an accomplice somewhere, stealing the heavy stuff?”

The thief remained silent and kept her head bowed. Thinking to slip off her mask and reveal her face, Julian reached out, placed his hand under the black enveloped chin and lifted her head. Sharp eyes gleamed calmly at him through the slits of the headgear. Whoa… Alarmed, he noted the mask was an integral part of the matte black suit. This is professional stealth wear… To examine her face, he’d have to remove her entire suit. The thought was not unpleasant; still, there could be an accomplice.

His gaze narrowed as he studied what little he could see of her features, searching for some clue to her identity. Her eyes were large, but in this light he couldn’t tell their color. He sighed to himself; the only part of her that the suit did not cover was her mouth. Julian found himself staring at plump, rosy lips, well sculpted with an articulated bow. They’re pretty perfect, he thought, again feeling his cock stir with interest. Hey, stop that, she’s not your type… he murmured internally as he considered what to do next. He returned his attention to the thief’s eyes to find himself being regarded with… Amusement? What the fuck… She thinks this is funny?

Suddenly one of the girl’s arms dropped and caught him by the shoulder. The swift movement tugged his upper body down, as the thief stretched up to meet him. She pulled him to her quickly and a warm mouth claimed his. Whoa… Pliant, soft lips pressed against his before a supple tongue pushed into his mouth and stroked its interior aggressively.

Heat seared Julian’s frame and he shuddered as sweet …butterscotch? nectar coupled with an elusive something invaded his senses, sending a delicious ripple of goosebumps across his body. Both his cock and his nipples responded, stiffening in need even as his tongue, seeking more of the sensual flavor, wrapped around the thief’s and sucked hard. Blindly grasping for her sleek form, he crushed it to him possessively.

Jeez, what a hardbody. The thought shifted lazily through his mind, This might work out… He made to cup the ass he’d eyed earlier, when two things happened that sent him into shock.

As the girl leaned into his erection, an answering swell grazed his leg. What…? His brain seemed to stall as he realized the body he held was not female. Then his head exploded in pain as something hard slammed against his skull.

Disorientated, he tried not to fall as he staggered and grasped at the shadowy figure backing away. Eluding him, the burglar climbed through the open window, turned and paused; glittering eyes stared at him as the inviting mouth twisted in a regretful smile. A warm, honey-soaked voice echoed about the room, seemingly from a vast distance.

“I’m so sorry I had to do that. I wish we had met under better circumstances. Once I’m out of here I’ll send an ambulance back, okay? Um, you should probably lie down now…”

Another quick smile and a leap and the figure was gone. Darkness claimed Julian’s senses, and he slumped to the floor with a thud.
