Hold Me Until Forever
Hold Me Until Forever
by Christina Phillips

Ella Clark has been in love with Alex Grayson forever. She’s tired of being invisible—or worse, being treated like his kid sister. If she can just get him to drop his iron-fisted control for two seconds, she’ll prove she knows exactly how to blow his mind.

Alex has been fighting his attraction to Ella since her should-have-been-innocent sweet sixteen kiss burned down his world. He’s damaged, and there’s no way he’ll ever drag her into his screwed up life. Until she offers him something he’s always craved—steamy, no-strings sex inside his exclusive BDSM club. Where she’ll be safe from the darkness that haunts him.

Except there’s nothing safe about being with Ella, and the more she gives, the harder it is to let her go. If he stays, he risks everything, but how can he walk away from the only woman he’s ever needed?

Review

4 stars

After reading Hold Me Until Morning, the previous book in the series, I was expectantly anticipating Alex’s story. With his broodiness and quiet intensity, I thought it would be awesome to see him unraveling over a woman. Thankfully, Christina Phillips delivered in that front much as I expected. Alex’s story was packed-full of intense emotions–these mostly coming from Alex and his determination to stay away from Ella.

I found Ella to be a great character to get to know. She was fun and quirky and gave as good as she got even at times when her vulnerability came unto the surface. She cared a great deal for Alex and his family, yet I admired her determination to step away from the family business and follow her dream. Of course, it was her decision to leave Grayson’s that ultimately brought her and Alex together so it was a win-win in all counts.

I enjoyed the way the author went about bringing Alex and Ella’s connection to the page while still allowing me to get to know the characters as individuals. I loved getting to see Alex fight his feelings and attractions to Ella just as much as I enjoyed Ella goading Alex along the way. Needless to say that their chemistry was intense. I enjoyed the back and forth, the lustful glances and the exploration of their attraction. It sure made for a more interesting read to see how Alex, slowly but surely, gave in completely to his attraction–especially after he spent so many years trying to keep it at bay.

Keep in mind that although this is the third book in the series and the characters from the previous books make appearances in this book, Alex and Ella’s story can be read as a stand alone.

All in all, a friends to lovers story that was years in the making and ultimately inevitable. 😉

*I received a copy of this title in exchange of my honest opinion.

Excerpt

(Ella’s just told Alex that she’s leaving Grayson’s, and Alex has gone round to her apartment to try and talk her out of it…)

Guilt twisted through her again. Before he’d taken her into Grayson’s she’d been floundering, her self-confidence still in bad shape after her mom’s asshole boyfriend had cornered her when she’d been fourteen. Her succession of part-time and casual jobs was nothing to brag about, and the only constant in her life had been her volunteer work at the Wildlife Retreat.

“I’m not leaving you in the shit. There’s plenty of time to find a replacement for me.”

He gave her a smoldering look. Oh, for fuck’s sake… “No one could take your place.”

If only he were talking about her as a woman and not his indispensable work colleague.

“Hate to say it, but you’ll probably be surprised.”

He didn’t immediately deny it, which stung more than it should.

“You plan on staying in touch?”

She couldn’t tell by his tone of voice whether he gave a damn one way or the other. So much for no one being able to take her place. Looked like he was already over it.

Don’t you dare say it. Heat flooded through her, but the words spilled out anyhow. “I might come visit you in your club one night.”

At least it wiped that infuriating, unreadable expression from his face. He stared at her as though she’d just grown a pair of horns.

“I don’t think so.”

It was the note of finality in his voice that really pissed her off—as if he thought she was joking and he didn’t find it funny.

“Why not? I think I’d really get off on a night at your club.” Take that. If only she didn’t look so rough. It was hard trying to act like a sophisticated woman of the world when she was barefoot and Alex could’ve stepped off the cover of GQ.

“Didn’t know you were into that scene.”

“There’s a lot you don’t know about me.” Including the fact I sleep in one of your old shirts. At least he hadn’t recognized it. Then again, it was about three years old. He’d left it here when the brothers had helped her move in, and somehow she kept forgetting to give it back to him.

Accidentally on purpose.

“I would’ve known about this.”

Was he laughing at her? He didn’t look as if he was, but it was hard to tell what he was thinking.

Whatever. She wasn’t backing down.

“I might not be hardcore, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like to experiment now and then.”

“Define what you mean by ‘experimenting.’”

He damn well was laughing at her. What’s the kinkiest thing I’ve read lately? “Ménages.” That’d shut him up. Or turn him on.

“You enjoy having sex with two men at the same time?”

She glared at him. “You find it so hard to believe that two men would want me?”

“That’s not what I find hard to believe.”

His quick-fire response took her breath away. Trust Alex to compliment and insult her in one easy comment.

She cleared her throat, which kind of ruined the worldly aura she was going for, but it was better than choking on her own words. “So, does your club cater for that kind of thing?”

What was she saying? She’d die if he called her bluff.

He didn’t answer right away. His eyes were all dark and smoky and it was suddenly hard to breathe properly. He seemed to be considering her question, which sent prickles of alarmed excitement over her bare skin.

Excalibur caters for almost anything,” he said.

Review

3-stars

Paris O’Connell is not sure about her next move career-wise. Since her teens she’s been living under her mother’s thumb, but lately she’s been feeling like the time has come for her to branch out. It is because of this need to isolate herself from her celebrity persona that she decides to hide out at her remote cabin. But she won’t be alone during her stay since her protective brother decided that she needed a chaperon. The situation wouldn’t have been half as bad if her childhood crush wasn’t the man tasked with looking out for her.

Cooper Grayson is not rejoicing in having to stay with Paris in an isolated cabin for a week, but his best friend feels like she needs someone to keep the media away so she can get the rest she so desperately needs. It doesn’t help that he doesn’t see Paris as a little sister anymore. In fact, it’s been years since he’s had any kind of brotherly feelings towards Paris. But she’s a celebrity and way out of his league, so not giving into his attraction to her shouldn’t be a problem. Besides, his best friend would beat the crap out of him if he knew how the thoughts he was entertaining regarding Paris.

But as life usually does, circumstances throw Cooper and Paris into playing a couple in public and soon they decide to keep acting their roles even when they are away from prying eyes.

One of the elements I enjoyed the most about this story was the concept. I found it intriguing to have a now-celebrity paired up with her childhood crush, so it was no surprise that I found myself enjoying that first half of the story very much. I liked Cooper and enjoyed watching him fight his attraction to Paris whenever they were in the same room together. And even though Paris was harder to relate to, the moments she spent with Cooper without her walls in place showed a insecure, shy woman who truly wanted to connect with a man in a deeper level–something she never had the opportunity to experience before Cooper.

During the time spent at the cabin, the author made every effort to showcase Cooper and Paris’ connection which I came to appreciate later on. Although sometimes the connection was hard to grasp, it was still present and the more time they spent together, the more I came to realize that there might have been something there. It helped that their chemistry was a palpable presence from the very start. I don’t think I would have stuck it out if their chemistry wasn’t as potent.

Hold Me Until Morning had the potential to be a great romantic story, but it was somewhere along the last half of the story that I lost my interest in the romance. I contribute this to Paris and her inability to stand up for herself. For a woman who had achieved great success in life due to her mother’s constant push into the limelight, she certainly could whine with the best of toddlers. I understood she was feeling constantly pressured by her mother’s expectations, but she had stopped being a minor a while back. In my opinion, she had ample opportunity to step away and make the right decision for herself. For me, there’s nothing more unattractive than a woman who continuously whines about her situation while she stands aside doing nothing. She kept getting on my nerves with her ambivalence about taking her career into her own hands. Especially when she continued to keep her mother involved in her career after starting something with Cooper.

Having said that, I do think the story was worthwhile. I enjoyed watching Paris and Cooper getting together and getting to know more about them. I also enjoyed the addition of the secondary characters–except of course Paris’ mother. She was a character alright, but not one I cared to know more about. Especially after the stunt she pulled over Cooper.

Keep in mind that although this is the second book in the Grayson Brothers series, it can be read as a stand alone. I have not read book one and had no problem following the story along, even when the characters from the previous book were referenced or made an appearance.

All in all, a hot little read about a girl finally getting her HEA with her childhood crush.

Excerpt

He pulled open the door and came face-to-face with Paris.

She raked her gaze over him as if she’d never seen a guy wearing only a towel before. It didn’t help that the towel barely covered his junk, or that her gaze snagged on his groin as if she could see what was going on between his legs.

Fuck. She couldn’t, could she? Heat rolled through him. This hallway was too fucking small for the both of them. He offered her what he hoped was a brotherly grin and stepped out of her way.

“Uh,” she said, as she stepped sideways at the exact same time he did. They ended up practically toe-to-toe. “Sorry.” Her voice was breathless, but she didn’t attempt to move again. Nor did he.

“It’s okay.” He had no idea what was okay, or why she’d felt the need to say sorry in the first place. Probably because he was having trouble thinking of anything but how much he wanted to plunge his fingers through her hair and kiss her fucking senseless.

Back the hell off, Cooper. He’d crossed the line once. He wouldn’t again.

“Crappy plumbing, huh.”

“What?” Plumbing? What the hell?

“Runs hot and cold.” She took a deep breath and he zeroed in on her breasts. Not that he could see much, but what he could see looked great. He swallowed and dragged his attention back to her face. Her lips were parted and her cheeks were pink.

His dick stood to attention and he grabbed his towel before the damn thing dropped to the floor. She’s my best friend’s little sister. He was supposed to be keeping her safe, not thinking of how she looked when she came.

He tried to focus on their conversation if you could call it that. “Yeah. Fucking awful.” Truth was he’d hardly noticed since he’d had a cold shower in any case. Not that it worked. He still damn well wanted her.

“Better put it on my to-do list.” Her voice was breathy.

He cleared his throat. He’d never had a to-do list in his life, but right now he did, and Paris was the only thing on it.

Stop thinking about her like that.

“I can take a look at it in the morning if you want.”

She licked her lips. He told himself he didn’t notice. “You’re kind of handy to have around, aren’t you?”

No one had ever told him that before. “I like fixing things.”

Her gaze slid from his face to his chest. “You fixed my bike once.”

Her bike? His fist tightened around the towel as he tried to make sense of her comment. “Oh, yeah.” He gave a pained laughed. Shit, that hurt. “Couldn’t leave you crying in the gutter, could I?”

She looked up at him again. Her eyes were all big and dark, and her lips were going to haunt his dreams.

“I used to pretend you were my other brother.”

Well, fuck. That told him. “You were always the little sister I never had.” But that was when they were kids. They weren’t kids now, and he sure as hell didn’t look on her as his sister anymore.

She let out a ragged breath that sent shivers across his chest. He was going to have to get away from her, while he could still think straight.

And then she ran the tip of her finger over his pecs.

Don’t do that.

Don’t fucking stop.

Jesus, I’m losing my mind.

“Cooper.” Her whisper killed whatever was left of his good sense, and with a growl he dug his fingers into her hair and pulled her toward him.

She tasted just as good as before, sweet and sexy all rolled into one, and when she wound her arms around his neck he forgot about hanging onto the towel and gripped her ass instead.

When he came up for air she looked up at him, her hair all messy around her face. “I don’t think of you as my brother anymore,” she said.
