Review

3-stars

What interested me about this story was the concept. I’ve read my fair share of MC Romances and I thought having a female club president would make for a fascinating story.

However, within a couple of pages into the story I found my interest waning when it came to the heroine. Em tried too hard and failed to impressed me. I wanted to see a badass chick with a softer side, but it became clear it was all pretense on her part–at least in regards to her degree of badassness.

I do have to say that enjoyed the hell out of Cade though. He was rough, hard-edged and everything I expected him to be and more. He was authentic in his duplicity–badass biker/cop. It worried me at first, but ultimately I came to understand how he could compartmentalize those two sides of his personality.

In any case, the chemistry between these two was potent and the author didn’t miss a beat in bringing it to the page. Within the first chapter alone you could see the sparks that flared between Em and Cade–they were intense and all-encompassing. The connection between Em and Cade was slow in coming, but made itself known which I came to appreciate a lot. I just wished I could have connected with Em fully, simply because I think it would have increased my enjoyment of this story.

As the first in a series, Rebel Love worked well in regards to establishing the world of The Dirty Sinners Motorcycle Club. The author not only introduced its members, but also set the stage for other upcoming books in the series.

All in all, a good start to a series and a sexy hot little read to make it all worthwhile.

He patted the motorcycle seat. “Hop on.”

“I’m nobody’s bitch. Especially some outlaw arrogant biker I just hired,” she warned. “What makes you so special that you can skip out on work?”
He chuckled despite himself. “Between you and me, I think the boss lady is sort of sweet on me.”

She stared at the bike seat, not even attempting to make a move.

Waving his ignorance flag, Cade hunched over the handlebars. “You want me to say I’m sorry? That I shouldn’t have kissed you yesterday? Not going to happen, Em. I’m not that good of a man.” He smiled. “One ride, and then I might consider kissing you again.”

“Clingy much?” she ground out.

“Got a rebellious streak, babe.” He slowly slid a glance down her body, knowing his needy feelings to own the heartbreaker biker chick were entirely stupid. But, shit, they were so damn powerful. Risky, even. “When I see something I want, nothing stops me from getting it.”

“You’re awfully confident for a mechanic, aren’t you? Let me remind you about something. Mechanics are a dime a dozen, so if you want to hit the road, you’d be doing us both a favor.” She shifted her weight, hip cocked in a prissy stance. “Hell, I’ll even buy your gas if that means you’ll ride off into the sunset. Like right now.”

She knew exactly the right buttons to push to piss him off. That kiss yesterday had been anything but forced. Yet if he called her bluff, went all Hulk on her, Em would run. Turn her cute button-shaped nose up at him and haul her sexy ass back inside. It probably made sense to apologize and try to get in her good graces, but Cade had never taken the easy route. And gaining Em Connors’s trust would be no different, since he wasn’t about to burn the man code and turn into some Hallmark greeting card guy. Instead he winked and revved the throttle on his bike. “Princess, I can tell you’re dying to know if I can handle this horsepower between my legs.”

Nick O’Flaherty and Kelly Abbott had their happy ending in sight when a friend’s call for help almost ended with them losing it to the blade of a knife. Now, in the aftermath of near-disaster, both men are trying to heal and move on.

Moving on together, though, is harder than either of them realized it would be. Kelly struggles with simply being a lover instead of the Doc, while Nick is mired in his recovery. The distance between them inches along in stilted silence.

Desperately seeking solace, Nick finally gathers the courage to sort through the possessions his dear friend and fellow Sidewinder teammate Elias Sanchez left him when he died. Instead of comforting memories, Nick and Kelly find a stack of letters and strict instructions from Eli that prompt them to send out a call for assistance. With Eli’s letters in hand, Sidewinder sets out on one last mission together, seeking peace and absolution from beyond the grave—and from each other.

Review

4 stars

The story picks up after the Miami mess that left Nick fighting for his life. The Sidewinder men have retreated to their respective lives and moving on–somewhat. While still recovering from his injuries, Nick decides to go through a box of stuff Elias Sanchez left him when he died only to discover several letters with specific instructions on where Sidewinder must travel to and what they must do once there.

I enjoyed this story very much. I loved having Sidewinder back together and I especially loved seeing them working towards strengthening the bond their shared. Of course, it was fantastic to have Ty and Zane back on the page, but I also enjoyed getting to know Elias Sanchez a little bit more. The road trip and subsequent letters and instructions revealed how deeply connected the guys were and how much Elias was missed by the men.

Of course, I can’t forget to mention Nick and Kelly’s relationship. On the surface, everything looks to be running smoothly between the two, but it’s clear there are underlying issues each man is dealing with that in one way or another has affected their relationship. Trust issues, insecurities, resentment, and anger are just some of them. Although I found some issues to be over the top and drawn out (especially for two men who knew one another for 20+ years!), I enjoyed the range in emotions these issues brought and how they were ultimately resolved.

Which leads me to sex! Oh yes, there was some of that and of course it was hot. But I admit, what did it for me were some of their more intimate conversations where they both lowered their guards. It was during these moments where they allowed the other to speak their mind without judgement that their connection as a couple shined through. I loved it!

All in all, a great addition to the series where friendship and loyalty took center stage–both for Sidewinder and Nick and Kelly as a couple.

MY HEART WANTS A KIND OF JUSTICE THE LAW CAN’T GIVE

On a dark, rainy night I drove my overstuffed junker car back to a town I never expected to see again.

And when I needed a rescue by the side of the road, a six-foot tall piece of hot, unfinished business named Mark was what the universe sent me.

Three years earlier I’d fled town (and Mark) to follow my wrongly-convicted father to his federal prison, working crappy jobs to stay afloat and visit him every second I could. But now Dad’s dead and I’m mysteriously offered the best job of my life at the college where his life blew up when he was accused of a crime he didn’t commit.

Someone wants me here. Desperately.

I’m hoping it’s Mark.

Because if it’s not, I’m in more danger than I ever imagined.

And if it is?

Mark may be the most dangerous choice of all.

My boss might be an international drug lord disguised as a dean at one of the top five universities in the country.

Like anyone’s going to believe me if I try to out him?

But I can’t help myself. I should learn to keep my mouth shut.

Someone’s decided to do that for me.

You can think you’ve had everything stolen from you. That there’s nothing left to lose.

You would be wrong.

My best friend’s been kidnapped. I was just captured. What I thought was a massive drug operation run by a man who killed my father turns out to be ten times more horrific.

I’m trapped. My best friend may be dead.

And Mark has no idea where to find me.

Some secrets should remain buried, my captors tell me.

And it looks like I will be, too.

Excerpt

Mark’s scent fills me, a mix of sweat and man and my own essence. We’re creating an infusion that will consume my senses for days to come. Years to come. Decades, even.

Yet centuries would never, ever give me enough.

“You okay?” he asks softly, moving my hair from my ear. “I don’t want to hurt you.”

I laugh. “Hurt? This is the opposite of hurt.” I wrap my legs around his waist and angle up, a sudden electric spark making me clench.

He groans. “You feel so good. Oh, so good, Carrie.”

I reach up to kiss him, biting his lower lip and sucking. He returns the kiss with more, his lips so hard, his tongue so demanding I feel bruised.

In a good way.

He pulls back, then thrusts in, the friction making me shudder. Another wave begins, off in the distance, as if my body is the ocean and my climax is on the horizon, just beginning. Again? The rolling bliss of bonelessness changes. It shifts, my body clenching and pulsing. My blood plumes and recedes, the buzzing bliss like a gift from the divine.

He moves with tight, taut thrusts and a kind of primal push that tells me Mark has abandoned reason, pitching into that privileged state where he’s willing to be vulnerable not only with me, but to me. He moves with such power and grace, the heat and fullness of him suddenly changing as he groans, the sound like an expression of love, my hands on his back, pressing him to me as he comes.

We breathe in short spurts against each other. We’re sweaty and panting, our bodies spent and happy.

Hearts, too.

He gives me a look that I can’t describe. I see all of him when he looks at me like this. Every part. And he sees me. In his eyes I’m turning, slowly, like a ballerina on a music box. His eyes admire me. He cherishes me.

I’m his.

The word “love” hangs in the air between us. It’s like a pendant on a gold chain, suspended between us. I want to say it. I feel it. I breathe it in and out. I touch it in the slick heat of his skin. I absorb it in the salty scent of his skin. I taste it on his lips.

But it goes unsaid.

Guest Post: 12 Days of Christmas with Authors Cindy Kirk, Tracy Brogan, and Jamie Beck *Excerpts and Giveaway*

12DaysXmas_banner

On the tenth day of Christmas LeAnn’s Book Reviews gave to me…three excerpts from holiday novels and an Amazon giftcard giveaway. Read on for some Christmas cheer with romantic snippets from authors Cindy Kirk, Tracy Brogan and Jamie Beck.

Happy Holidays!

Excerpts

Christmas in Good Hope by Cindy Kirk

“You’re an amazing woman, Ami Bloom.”

“You’re right.” Her bright smile flashed. “I am.”

He laughed.

Her laughter soon mingled with his.

Then their eyes met. The laughter died in his throat and his heart became a swift, hard beat.

He reached out for her and felt her arms encircle his neck. She was so lovely. Did she have any idea the power she had over him?

The feel of her soft curves had Beck forgetting his resolve to keep it all business between them. Just this once he would stop thinking and open himself to the moment, to her. He shifted, gathered her closer still, and kissed her temple.

When she gave a pleasure-filled sigh and lifted her face, he lowered his mouth to hers and found it as soft and sweet as he’d imagined.

The kiss started out gentle and tender but quickly morphed into something more, something that felt … life altering. When her fingers slid into his hair and she began to kiss him back with equal enthusiasm, Beck knew he was in over his head.

Jingle Bell Harbor by Tracy Brogan

He cupped my face with both hands and traced one thumb over my bottom lip, a soft, slow motion as he stared at my mouth for an eternity. And then, at last, he leaned in and kissed me. Warm, delicious perfection. Pressure and insistence in just the right measure. I’d told Drew he’d been my first real kiss at fourteen. Now I realized I hadn’t truly had my first real kiss, because this was it. I felt it from my lips all the way down to my toes and past every detour in between.

I wound my hand around the back of his neck, needing him closer, and closer still. I hadn’t underestimated just how soft that hair of his was, but I had, remarkably, underestimated my body’s instantaneous reaction to his touch. It was electric. I gave myself up to the moment. I’d earned it, this indulgence. Because I was on vacation, and Drew Hampton just might have superpowers after all.

Arms tangling, heads tilting, pressure building. The kiss ended far too soon, but we stayed close, forehead to forehead. Breathy. Sizzling. Anticipating.

“I’ve waited a very long time for a chance to do that again,” he said, his breath a caress against my cheek.

I tugged off my scarf in a hasty motion. “In that case, we should make up for lost time,” I said. And then I kissed him again. And again, and again.

Accidentally Hers by Jamie Beck

“I like you. I like you a lot.”

Heat shot up her arm and spread throughout her chest as his thumb brushed against the backof her hand. When she panicked and tried to pull away, he gripped her hand tighter. “Grey?”

He was staring at her as his other hand brushed back her hair. His touch set off a spark ofenergy that pulsed throughout the room. They both held their breath for a second, eyes locked on each other.

“Screw it,” he muttered before pulling her into a powerful kiss—one she felt down to her toes the instant his hot mouth claimed hers. A low rumble resonated in his chest as he tried to get closer to her despite their awkward positions in the chairs.

For several exhilarating seconds, she allowed herself to be swept away by the taste and smellof him. By the commanding way his tongue tangoed with hers. By the rising temperature in the room and shivery sensations overwhelming her entire body as he buried his hands in her hair.

Kissing Grey was every bit as hot as she’d imagined, and that heat shot straight through her abdomen and in between her legs.

One of his hands ran down her neck and back, pulling her closer. His chest heaved. Low sounds rumbled deep in the back of his throat as he got carried away and took her right along for the ride, crushing her to him.

Weeks and weeks of pent-up desire burst forth, causing her resolve to falter. She dug her hands into his thick, wavy hair, kissing him as she’d done so many times in her dreams. Then danger signs flashed in her mind, causing her to exert gentle pressure against his chest. “Wait.”

He kept his forehead pressed to hers, allowing his breathing to slow down. He held her there, cupping her neck, his thumbs gently rubbing her jaw. “Sorry. That wasn’t planned . . . or particularly gentle.”

Review

4 stars

This book was an absolute surprise! Light-hearted moments that captured the beginnings of a romance, intense emotion-driven discussions and heated moments that intensified the connection between the characters are just a few of the elements that make Come Back to Me such a fantastic read.

I loved Kit’s struggle with coming to terms with the losses in his life. His journey felt real and served to burrow him deeper into my heart. He was sweet, candid and an overall great guy. He came out of his journey a little bit scarred but nonetheless determined to move on.

Jessa was also a great character to get to know. I admired the fact that she allowed herself the chance to live her life on her terms. I admired the growth she achieved. Her loss shaped her in some ways making her stronger and more matured in a way that she couldn’t have achieved otherwise. She was smart, tenacious and complemented Kit in every way.

What I enjoyed the most about this book were the characters and how the author gave me the opportunity to truly get to know them while witnessing their connection grow and strengthened as the story progressed. I appreciated the fact that the author pulled no punches in bringing the emotions to the page in a way that truly impacted the reader. But mostly, I loved how the emotions were intense but never overwhelming.

All in all, a sweet yet sexy and emotion driven romance.

Review

4 stars

What I enjoyed the most about this story was how Colette West brought Scarlett and Jake together. At a glance these two are complete opposites–Scarlett’s wild child reputation vs. Scott’s well known clean-cut preacher’s son presence. This disparity is personalities was what made things so great between these two. Add to that the intense chemistry they shared and you’ve got yourself one intriguing story.

I found myself immediately invested in Scarlett and Scott’s relationship because I truly wanted to see how they would manage not only their celebrity statuses but also their different beliefs. I appreciated the fact that the author allowed me the chance to get to know Scarlett and Scott and what drove them in life. As I got to know them better I came to understand where they each were coming from which allowed me to see how well they complemented each other.

Scarlett and Scott shared some great candid moments as well as some tempestuos exchanges. But the moments that stood out for me the most were the honest interactions where they let their guards down. Of course, their intimate moments were enjoyable as well. I especially enjoyed seeing Scott let go of his control and seeing that passionate side of his. It sure made for some steamy reading!

Although this is the sixth book in the New York Kings series it can be read as a stand alone. I’ve yet to read the previous books in the series and I had no problem following the story along. In any case, I became intrigued by the other couples and have added their books to my TBR.

All in all, a very enjoyable read.

An M/M BDSM Romance

A year ago, my best friend Hal died at the hands of an incompetent “dom.” So I started the Subs Club, a private blog where submissives can review doms and call out the douche bags.

A perfect example of the kind of arrogant asshole I mean? The Disciplinarian. He has a pornstache. He loves meat, stoicism, America, and real discipline. And he thinks subs exist to serve him.

But . . . not everything about him is awful. His Davy Crockett act just seems like a cover for his fear of intimacy, and part of me wants to show him it’s okay to get close to people. And, I mean, sue me, but I have fantasized about real discipline. Not role-play, but like, Dave, you’re gonna be thirty in four years and you still work in a mall; get your ass in gear or I’ll spank it.

Not that I’d ever trust anyone with that kind of control.

I’m gonna redefine “battle of wills” for the Disciplinarian. Or I’m gonna bone him. It’s hard to say.

—Dave

About The Subs Club Universe

After the death of their friend Hal at the hands of an irresponsible dom, submissive friends Dave, Kamen, Miles, and Gould band together to form the Subs Club—an organization seeking to expose dangerous local doms. The club slowly evolves as romances blossom, loyalties are tested, and tensions mount in a community already struggling for unity in the wake of Hal’s death.

From domestic discipline to knife play to fashion paraphilia, and from family drama to new jobs to first loves, the members of the Subs Club explore life’s kinks inside and outside of the bedroom as they attempt to let go of the past and move forward.

  • Age: 28
  • Occupation: shop owner
  • Orientation: queer
  • Boy Band Stereotype: “sort of a weird combination of the bad boy and the middle-aged, straitlaced accountant who got pulled up onstage to dance during a concert.” –Dave

Intellectual, uptight, and the owner of numerous Mr. Rogers-style cardigans, Miles sometimes takes a while to warm up to people, and vice versa. His friends appreciate his wealth of BDSM knowledge, but they all wish he’d loosen up. Like, just a little.

But Miles’s dirty little not-so-secret is that he’s a true masochist. His favorite activity is knife play, though he has trouble finding tops experienced enough with edge play to do the sort of scenes he’s interested in. Says Dave: “If someone asked him to try pulling a barge through the Erie Canal with a chain attached to his PA piercing, he’d probably do it. But you’d never know that about him, because he dressed like a minister’s daughter and behaved like the easily scandalized maiden aunt in a British drawing room play.”

While Miles initially opposes the founding of the Subs Club, offering a Shakespearean prophecy that rating local doms on a website will backfire, he’s soon seduced by the idea of having a platform through which to discuss the academic and theoretical aspects of kink. He even gets caught up in reviewing the doms.

Miles is conflicted about his feelings toward Hal. While he agrees that Bill Henson, the dom whose ignorance got Hal killed, was in the wrong, he has a hard time not judging Hal for his lack of caution and refusal to grow up. Miles likes for things to be perfect—for people to behave a certain way, and for things to go as planned.

Which is not how life—or humans—work. At all.

5-stars

Ever since the death of his friend Hal, David’s been preoccupied about safety in the BDSM community. He feels even stronger about it after finding out that the man who hurt his friend has been accepted back in the dungeon he plays at.

After talking to the owners on the club, David is certain that something must be done, so The Subs Club idea takes form. The main idea is to provide an outlet where subs and bottoms can talk freely their concerns, experiences and/or grievances they’ve encountered in the community.

But David’s mind is also occupied with the man with The Disciplinarian. David gets it into his head to expose him as the type of Dom that represents everything he loathes about Doms–arrogant, inconsiderate, unsafe. But soon he recognizes that ‘D’ is more than what he appears to be and the very man who can provide what David needs.

I loved this story mainly because I loved David’s voice. He was adamant about his cause and hid a great deal of fear and uncertainty about his kinky needs. Especially after his friend’s death. But he was also funny, charming and trouble! I was completely smitten with him, especially after he started falling for ‘D’. His journey was a treat to read and I couldn’t get enough. Literally. I was so very disappointed when the story ended, since I enjoyed him so much.

There were other aspects of the story I enjoyed too. JA Rock went to great lengths to bring the kink while still focusing on the other issues surrounding this group of friends. So as expected, David’s ‘scenes’ with ‘D’ where intense yet very revealing in regards to both men. I loved how their relationship transitioned from casual play into something more.

As the first book in a series, The Subs Club worked in all aspects. The author brought to the page not only the romance, connection and chemistry between David and ‘D’, she also introduced an intriguing set of characters and set the stage for other upcoming books in the series.

All in all, a fantastic start to a series. I can’t wait to read Miles’ story, it promises to be even more interesting that David’s, I think.

Excerpt

I sat up suddenly. “Douche bag!”

Kamen and Gould both looked at me.

I stood and hurried to the kitchen to get my laptop. “That’s who was at the club.” I brought the computer over and set it on the coffee table.

“What?” Kamen asked.

“There was this mountain man guy there on Friday.” I fired up the laptop. “I, like, wanted to have his children and shave his face but also feel his mustache sanding my balls and have him teach me how to smoke venison. It was a bounty of contradictions.”

Kamen’s brow knit. “You want to have children?”

“No, not at all; I want to die alone and unloved. Anyway, I thought he looked familiar. It was the Disciplinarian.”

“Ohhh.” Kamen leaned forward as I brought up Fetmatch. “That guy’s legend.”

I logged onto Fet and found the Disciplinarian’s profile. Yep, the picture was Pornstache—rugged, virile, and glowering at the camera with his pale-blue eyes.

“He’s meant to be a total hard-ass, right?” Gould let his leg slide off the table. “You have to, like, bring him the head of a dragon to even be considered for a session.”

I cleared my throat and read the profile statement out loud while Kamen looked over my shoulder.

“‘Obediance,’” I read, “—spelled wrong—‘is what I expect. I see boys by appointment only, and I train them in the art of obedience. I use corporal punishment to do this. Under my tutelage, many boys are transformed. If I select you to do a scene with me, I will expect your absolute submission. I am experienced with a variety of whips, canes, paddles, etc. You will be subject to my rules and my decisions.

“‘I am dominant in all areas of my life, and I do not tolerate disobedience, rudeness, or negative attitude. You are unlikely to find anyone as skilled as I at administering the discipline you need. But know that my training will not be easy.

“‘You must be under 30, in good shape, and able to hold position through a long punishment. You must also be able to think creatively about the ways you will satisfy me.

“‘If you are interested in a session with the Disciplinarian, please fill out the attached questionnaire. Serious inquiries only.’”

Below the profile summary was a six-item questionnaire for potential applicants, as well as requirements for answer length—between three and five sentences—and formatting. Dear Sir was the required salutation, and boy the sign off.

Oh my God. To think I’d wanted this fucker to spank the seat of my fantasy bell-bottoms.

I brought up the questionnaire.

Why do you need to be punished? Were you physically disciplined as a child? How? Are you prepared to surrender complete control to me during a disciplinary session, and to allow me to determine the length and severity of a punishment? To submit to punishments that include: spanking, corner time, mouth soaping, enemas, body scrubbing, writing lines, housework, denial of bathroom privileges, figging, scolding, chastity, forced exercise, and rectal temperature-taking? Do you understand that “punishment” is intended to be unpleasant—no chickening out and safewording? What do you hope to get out of a session? What are your feelings on the outdoors?

“Dave, that totally sounds like your thing,” Kamen said. “All the punishment stuff.”

“Uh, yeah.” I scrolled through the questions again. “Except for the safeword-equals-chickening-out bullshit.”

“Oh, right.”

“What a dick. I can’t believe I wanted to feel his mustache in all my secret places.”

A Navy SEALs Fun Fact from Anne Elizabeth

Being in combat changes things. Anyone who has ‘boots on ground’ knows that, and so does the family—tread gently.

Excerpt

Master Chief Declan Swifton of SEAL Team Five rolled over the side of the Rigid-hulled Inflatable Boat and slid soundlessly into the Pacific Ocean. The RIB took off without even a comment from the operator, leaving Declan to sink farther into the drink.

The temperature cooled as he swam away from the surface. Fish skirted the edges of his thighs, small shimmers of movement against his skin. He scissor-kicked his way forward. The ocean currents caught him, dragging him in the direction they wanted to go, toward shore. He lay with his arms at his sides, frog-kicking only. Above him, he could see the afternoon sunlight glistening and frothy foam chasing away the glassy surface. Down here things were different…calmer. Peaceful, in a way few souls would understand, and yet he knew that even he would have to surface soon.

His lungs would start to ache and burn, his gut would begin to feel as if it would cave in, and that would force him to either head topside or drink in the salt water. But there was still time. This was the water in front of Imperial Beach and the apartment he lived in. He knew it very well.

Scanning the ocean floor, he gauged it would be about thirty seconds until he reached one of the many rocky sandbars out here. He’d have to pull up before then, or the force of the current would smack him against the side.

As his body began to complain, he used both arms and legs to draw himself upward. Breaking the surface, he opened his mouth and drew in air like a thirsty man would gulp water.

The waves bounced him like a buoy. The tide was coming in and the wind was picking up momentum. Looking at the sky to the east, he could see that there would most likely be a storm today. Over his should, to the west, he spied a wave coming his way large enough to take him to shore. It would reach him in about thirty seconds.

Dec took a long, slow breath and appreciated the sun dropping into the horizon. The colors were extraordinary; orange and gold dappled the horizon as the blazing ball of light attempted to sink before the moon lifted higher in the sky.

His hands flexed, cupping the water. It had been a hot day, and the sun’s rays had heated the top of the ocean, making the surface feel like a warm bath, loosening his muscles. Three months ago, he’d been in waters so frigid, with actual ice caps—the memory still made him cold. But here, the Pacific Ocean off California’s Imperial Beach, was a slice of heaven.

Coming in from the east were some nasty-looking cumulonimbus clouds. Seeing the lightning arc way off toward the distant desert, he decided it was time to go in, and right on cue, here came a perfect wave.

Swimming at top speed, Declan pushed his way through another changing current, one that sought to drag him into faster-moving waters. He went over a higher sandbar, having no intention of going to Mexico today, and increased the reach of his stroke. With single-mindedness he worked his way into the more placid surf as he homed in on a large stretch of beach.

The SEAL felt a few sea lions swimming around him, and one nosed him in the gut and another in his back a few times, assessing whether or not he’d play. Not this time, my friends. He continued swimming without engaging. If he stopped to play, he’d be out there for hours.

Switching to the breaststroke, his arms protested. His platoon had switched their training this month to desert-warfare techniques, and he’d been sweating his balls off in the heat. He managed to learn a thing or two, even now, after all of his years in the Teams. But it felt good to be back in the ocean, his element. He’d live in the deep blue like a Jules Verne character if he could.

Caesar Romano’s catering career is doing better than he’d ever dreamed. And so is his love life—even if his boyfriend’s house in Staten Island is way too far from civilization for his liking. But then in short order, Caesar is duped into helping his cousin propose, is tricked by his best friend and business partner into appearing on live television, and is harassed by a thug-like personal trainer and his far too beautiful wife. In fact, Caesar is almost too busy to notice that something is troubling his PI boyfriend, Dan Albright.

Almost.

Laid-back, open, charming—that’s the impression hunky former NYPD Detective Dan Albright gives everyone. Caesar can add sexually adventurous and a bit of an exhibitionist. But he also knows that Dan is hiding something—something dark and a little dangerous—and when Dan’s silence over his mysterious past threatens to harm them both, it’s Caesar’s turn to save the day.

But then again, a break-in, a gallery party, an heirloom ring, a new suit, and a stalker with bad BO are all just a typical week for Caesar Romano.

Review

4 stars

Caesar has the uncanny ability to put himself right smack in the middle of trouble, especially if it pertains to one of his lover’s cases. This time around it’s no different, only he’s also trying to help his cousin with a wedding proposal, making his debut on TV and realizing just how much Dan means to him.

LB Gregg’s ability to bring together a mix of different elements has to be my favorite aspect of this story. The humor, the heat, the intrigue and the romance are all present in this story and worked in together so that that they complement each other without dragging the story or making it feel overwhelming for the reader. There were even some subtle emotions there towards the end, which were an added bonus in my opinion. Yes, finally! 😉

The author did a wonderful job of keeping the reader intrigued and riveted to the story. This I attribute to Caesar’s voice. His ramblings were a thing of beauty and added to my enjoyment of the story. Add to that Dan’s participation and I could not help but love these two together. Their flirty banter, their bickering and those stolen moments when their attraction for one another took over were just the icing on the elaborate turn of events Caesar finds himself the center of.

Keep in mind that although this is the third book in the Romano and Albright series, it can be read as a stand alone. the author does a fantastic job of bringing the reader up to date in regards to Caesar’s previous adventures while still bringing to the page a new case for Caesar to (unknowingly) be involved in.

All in all, an intriguing and enjoyable read!

Excerpt

As an ex–law enforcement officer, Dan took precautions. Locks secured every window and door, and he’d wired the place to the hilt. I’d worked in the gallery world for years, and I’d grown familiar with the ins and outs of various alarm keypads. My own family didn’t bother with fancy security companies. We relied on brute strength, intimidation, and the local neighborhood watch. More like a witch hunt than a watch, but effective nonetheless. And, when pressed, Romanos were swift to drive intruders away with the swing of a Louisville Slugger. There wasn’t a bat in Dan’s home, so I opted for his alarm.

I retrieved my cell from the dresser as the jerk on the roof did whatever asshole thing he was hell-bent on doing. I should have checked, but something—call it intuition—had me moving with haste to the stairs, phoning Dan as I descended. Having had my fair share of incidents in the past two months, I knew to call, but first I’d have to deal with Dan’s I don’t fucking believe this.

“Hey,” he panted, and he wasn’t the only one gasping. My lungs creaked from all the exertion.

“Question.” I swallowed. “Do you—”

“What’s wrong with your voice? Did you do something to your rib again? You’re making that kicked-puppy sound. The one you make when you’re in pain but you won’t tell me and I have to slip Vicodin into your milkshake. What are you doing?”

“What makes you think I’m doing anything? I’m doing nothing. I’m fine.” Just winded from the stairs. “Did you maybe schedule the cable company and forget?” I peered through the peephole again. Empty step, sprinkler sprinkling, birds slurping worms, kids on scooters, fishbowl suburbia. Check. Nothing had changed.

“Negative. I don’t have cable.”

“Huh. That’s unnerving, because there’s a guy on your roof.”

“What roof? Who’s on the roof? My roof?” A sharp inhale told me his jog had ratcheted to a flat run. “What do you mean?”

“I mean the cable guy climbed onto your house after I told him to leave. I’m just letting you know.” A thump from somewhere above and I flipped the plastic lid on the alarm panel, revealing the keypad. Pretty straightforward. P for police and the * sign together and I’d scare any prowler out of his pants and onto the lawn. “I have the situation under control.”

“The hell you do. Is he still there? You’re not kidding, right?”

“No. I am not kidding—you always ask me that. Why would I kid?” It was difficult keeping exasperation from my voice, but I managed valiantly. “How do I know what he’s doing? I’m not watching, although I can see his van from the window. It’s on the street. I’m hitting the alarm. Heads-up. Also chop-chop. I’m going to be late for work.”

“Yes. Hit the fucking alarm.”

An earsplitting eeeeeeee breached the peaceful splendor of Chez Albright.

I scurried to the kitchen as Dan yelled, “I’m two blocks from the house. You still there?”

“Yes, of course.”—eeeeeeee—“Where would I go? He’s out there. So I’m in here. Dial it down. I’m fine.”

“You need to leave the house.”

“That’s not going to happen.” I checked the window. “There are kids on the sidewalk. I don’t want a scene.”

“I think that train left the station—”

The cable guy fell from the roof in a flutter of green shirttails. He landed catlike in the grass directly in front of the kitchen window. “Holy crap.”

Dan panted, “What? Talk to me.”

The man popped effortlessly to his feet and hiked a rather utilitarian black backpack over his shoulder. Anyone else would have broken an arm or an ankle falling from that height, but no. The bastard didn’t even bother to check himself. Far less fatigued than he first appeared at Dan’s doorstep, he was nonetheless sopping in sweat. His gaze caught mine and he fucking bowed—the dick—then he flipped me off, mouthing, Fuck you, and darted under the clothesline. “I . . . don’t believe this guy.”

He vaulted the fence like a goddamn superhero. “My God. He’s like Batman.”

“What the— Did you say Batman?”

Eeeeeee!

I shouted over the alarm, “He looked right at me! That asshole, but holy crap, he’s totally parkour. I’ve never seen anything like him. I don’t think you can catch him.”

“Thank you for the vote of confidence.”

The guy cut through the neighbor’s backyard and disappeared around the corner of a garage as the house alarm clanged my head like a gong. I pressed a finger against my ear. “He’s gone. Wow. Where are you? If you come through the back—”

Any hope the intruder would run smack into Dan coming from the opposite direction was dashed as the front door burst open and my hero announced, “I’m here. Where is he?”

“Gone. I told you. Jesus, the guy could move.” I tossed my phone on the counter. I wasn’t sure what my next move should be, so I let Dan lead. He braced one hand against the wall, gasping for air—which didn’t seem entirely heroic—and stabbed at the keypad with his index finger. The alarm ceased and, thank God, I could hear myself think again. Summer heat met AC, and a wave of tepid air blew through the living room.

“FYI, I move too.” Dan sucked wind. “I sprinted up that fucking hill.”

He swiped his forehead and joined me in the kitchen, his Shakespeare in the Park T-shirt soaked to his skin. Unlike the intruder, he wore his perspiration very well. Face flushed, hale and hearty in loose-fitting black running shorts, he flipped the backdoor locks and disappeared down the steps.

I followed a few paces behind, watching as he scoped the backyard. “He’s not here.”

“I can see that.”

He glared at the kitchen roof where two stubby dormers were connected by a thin outcropping of architectural tiles. One dormer held the bath window, the other the guest room window. Bolted between the dormers? A long-nosed satellite dish.

Dan looked ready to scale the brick and poke around for clues, or climb for a better vantage point of the cable guy’s escape route, but his outdoor inspection lasted two seconds. He stared at me briefly, dark brows knitted together, before stomping back into the kitchen. He scrubbed at his damp hair, leaving finger-wide furrows. At least his breathing was somewhat under control.

His gaze raked me, head to toe, and he stalled for a second. “So, you look fine this morning.”

“Of course I do.” I answered stiffly because I was indeed fine. What had he expected? That I’d faint over a possible break-in? Please. “I’ve dealt with intruders before. I’m not a novice.”

“All right, Mr. Not A Novice.” I swear to God his eyes twinkled. His jaw definitely twitched. “Tell me exactly what happened, and don’t stop talking until you get to the part where you realize you’re still bare-ass naked.”

I glanced south and found an unencumbered view to my toes. Not a stitch covered me, not even my Hugo Boss underwear. I’d just exposed myself to his entire neighborhood and, while I’m sure they were impressed—because who wouldn’t be?—I was also mortified. I dashed through the kitchen, resisting the natural urge to clap both hands over my crotch. “That explains the breeze.”

“I’m not complaining.”

Review

4 stars

Erin Robinson left her hometown to pursue her Broadway dream, but when her mouth get her fired she returns under the pretense of spending the holidays with her family. With no idea of what step to take next in her life, Erin feels a little bit lost and a lot apprehensive. Especially when she runs to the only man who has always managed to push all her bottoms and ignite all her passion.

Warren Davis is a Marine questioning his next step in life after being injured in action. He’s had an on again off again friends with benefits relationship with Erin, but now he wants more. And what better way to get the girl that has driven him crazy through the years than with an interesting game of Truth and Dare?

With both Erin and Warren thinking about their next step in life, will these too finally step in the right direction together?

This was a fun steamy read. As with other books by this author, Katee Robert didn’t miss a beat in bringing Erin and Warren’s chemistry to the page until their passion and need for each other took center stage. I liked the ‘game’ aspect of this story, even though I’m not usually a fan of the ‘Dare’ trope in my romance. However, Katee Robert worked it in a way that was both fun and revealing. As Erin and Warren handed out and completed their challenges, their personalities made themselves known as well as what they wanted/needed from the other.

Unlike other novellas in this series, this one didn’t delve too deeply into the characters instead focusing in bringing forth their connection and physical attraction to one another. It was obvious how much Erin and Warren desired one another as well as how deeply they cared for each other. The underlying emotions that had brought them together through the years were subtle yet easily identifiable to the reader, which ultimately led me to become invested in their story.

This is the last book in the Out of Uniform series and it can be read as a stand alone.

All in all, a fun and steamy quick read, just right to cuddled up with this holiday season.

Excerpt

“You haven’t even heard what I’m proposing.”

“I don’t have to. I know you. And as great as an hour of hot sweaty sex would be, I’m not in the mood.”

That, more than anything else, confirmed there was something wrong. He tamped down the urge to ask what it was. They weren’t that kind of friends. Not yet. They were two people who’d hooked up a handful of times in the last six years. That was it.

That was what he was trying to change.

So he nudged her shoulder, hating that the winter made so many layers necessary. It was only his imagination making him think he could feel the heat of her body through her coat from that tiny touch. “Truth or dare, Freckles?”

Her jaw dropped. “You’re joking.”

“We haven’t done it in years.” Not since the night they met.

“Right. Because we’re grown-ass adults, and truth or dare is for kids.”

He watched the memories reflected in her hazel eyes. Truth or dare was how they’d gotten started in the first place. They’d been with a group of friends down at Mill Creek and someone had suggested the game. It had been a wild night of the kind of trouble only teenagers could get into, and it had culminated out in the middle of the creek where another of their friends dared Erin to kiss Warren.

And, holy fuck, had she kissed him.
