Aaron Evans embodies every complication Wren Tucker knows he doesn’t need. The tempting go-go dancer refuses to leave him alone and his attempts to get into Wren’s bunker pants don’t stop at the club, even the walls of the Firehouse aren’t safe. Wren’s control is only so strong, and his desire for Aaron is turning into a clawing need that’s digging through the many reasons keeping Aaron at bay.

Aaron is two cold showers away from hypothermia if the hot fireman of his dreams won’t give in to the lust Aaron sees blazing in Wren’s eyes. The only issue is, Wren is a forever man, and Aaron doesn’t have that in him to give, not with so many secrets locked behind the glitter and gold of his beautiful world.

As Wren begins to cave to Aaron’s delicious demands, he gets a deeper view of the tarnished landscape Aaron exists in. A murky pit of drug addiction that’s slowly dragging Aaron under, and Wren is going to have to fight like hell to save Aaron from it, to even have a chance at a new beginning with the man who has brought him out of the shadows.

Excerpt

“One of these days, Wren Tucker…” Aaron turned to his side, pillowing his head with his bent arm. His eyes slid closed, and he murmured, “I’m going to get to you.”

You already do. Wren crouched beside the bed. The first time Wren had seen him, Aaron had been dancing. The light from the club had touched on every toned dip and groove of Aaron’s body as it swiveled on the raised stage, his tight ass shaking with the beat of the music. All of that had been amazing, but it had been Aaron’s face that had captivated him—the free expression, like he was in another world. His full lips mouthing the lyrics, his head thrown back, and the locks of his black hair waving around his flushed face.

In that moment of abandon, Aaron had met Wren’s gaze, a smile tugging at the corner of his sensual mouth. Aaron had continued the dance, but he hadn’t stopped focusing on Wren.

“You’re not giving me a sponge bath,” Taber snapped and glowered at Deacon as he wheeled himself into the locker bay. The sweat ran down his temples, his shirt soaked through with it. He took in his motionless legs and grimaced before shooting Deacon another irritated look.

Deacon sat with his feet on one of the peeling dark blue benches, his back reclined against a bank of gray lockers along the far wall in the physical therapy building. A book was balanced on his knees, and black-rimmed glasses perched on his nose. His shaggy auburn hair fell to curl around his ears in disarray.

Deacon peered at him with pale green eyes. “There go my dreams of rubbing you down and tweeting the pics.”

Q&A with Heloise

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

It started with an image, two young men in the deep woods. As soon as I asked them why they were there, they couldn’t stop telling me.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere. Between the lines in fiction and nonfiction, poetry, songs, conversations, eavesdropping…

Does music play any type of role in your writing?

It does, though I’m not a playlist person. It helps me define my characters. For Hunter in this novel I listened to some newer Decemberists. For his lover’s voice in the next novel, I’m listening to Dropkick Murphys. For historicals I listen to the music of the period. Thank goodness for Pandora 😀

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

This. I’m in promotion hell right now–this is my first time to the rodeo, and I hope to be more ready and streamlined for the next release. Otherwise, I’m a pantser so I will soon sit my ass down and go.

What are your current projects?

The working title to the sequel to this novel is “Send Lawyers, Guns, and Roses.” I have a Renaissance era romance/mystery on submission and hope to hear about that soon.

Thanks for hosting me today!
Heloise

Excerpt

It was nine o’clock. They’d long lost the reservation. Hunter turned away from the warm lights of the restaurant, heart heavy. Shawn was too good to be true. For all he knew, he had a problem like Jerry’s, who’d often left him waiting, wondering, and ultimately fearing as dinner sat cold on the table. He gave in and took a step toward home.

“Hunter!”

He whipped around.

Shawn rushed toward him. He slipped on the snowy sidewalk, nearly going down, but Hunter ran at him, and they crashed together so hard his teeth clicked. Shawn’s arms went around him and his around Shawn, and they managed to hold each other up.

“I’m sorry,” were the first words out of Shawn’s mouth.

“All you deserve is pizza crusts,” Hunter mock-growled and kissed him, unconsciously trying to taste booze on his breath. Like Jerry and too many broken promises. Relieved it was only peppermint mouthwash, he didn’t stop kissing him.

When Hunter let him speak, Shawn said, “I’m starving, I’ll take it.” He pushed Hunter a little away from him. “Jesus. You’re freezing.”

“And starving. There’s a Greek pizza place down this way, come on—”

“I’ll make it up to you,” he said, taking Hunter’s hand.

Bad choices. We all make them, some more than others. Dusty’s choices have left him unemployed, broke and practically homeless. Despite the major issues he has with his family, his only rational choice is to sell everything and move into his parents’ basement. At thirty. Looking for a ride west, he answers a phone ad. The voice at the other end of the line flows like dark, rich honey. Finally something to look forward to—listening to Joe’s voice all the way from Illinois to Idaho.

Rather than the hip crooner of Dusty’s fantasies, Joe turns out to look more like a panhandler. Is that because Joe dresses down, or are Dusty’s preconceptions about Native Americans clouding his vision? Joe is silent more often than not. He has a complicated past and still has amends to make. But he is ready to move on. Dusty feels trapped. Two damaged men, one small car driving two thousand miles into the sun—sometimes things need to break down before they can get fixed.

Excerpt

When Joe finished with the hand, he put his fingers under Dusty’s chin and tipped his face toward the light. His touch was gentle, like a lover right before a first kiss. Dusty’s lips opened as he stared up into Joe’s dark brown eyes. Joe’s gaze flicked to Dusty’s mouth, then away. He wet some gauze and began dabbing at Dusty’s cheek.

Dusty had forgotten about scrape on his face. Now it stung. So much for the moment before a kiss. He bit the inside of his lip to keep from pulling away.

“Don’t worry.” Joe’s voice was soft, amused. “This won’t scar your handsome face.”

Dusty rolled his eyes. Handsome was about the last thing he’d call himself tonight. Still, he found himself smiling at the thought.

Michael stepped forward and grabbed Simon by his shoulders. “Why are you really here?” he snarled.

“Because you’ve locked yourself away?” Simon whispered and gazed at him with eyes filled with concern.

That look stabbed into Michael. “And you care why?”

“Because…” Simon shrugged, dislodging Michael’s hold, and then cupped Michael’s face with a trembling hand. “What happened wasn’t your fault, and you needed someone to come and shove that truth into your face.”

“You picked the short straw?” Michael hated that Simon’s hand on his cheek brought him more comfort than anything else had. Just like at the hospital.

Simon shook his head, and his gaze fell to Michael’s lips. His hand came down to brush against the edge of Michael’s bottom lip. A pink flush rose along Simon’s cheeks.

Michael felt that innocent touch like a jolt through his body. He tilted Simon’s face up, and the sensual invitation in his eyes shocked and inflamed him.

He didn’t have the energy to fight against what he wanted, and right now that was Simon. With a groan of defeat, he smashed his lips to Simon’s and took the sweet oblivion that Simon offered.

Review

4 stars

Liam’s anxiety has taking a turn for the worse and he’s thankful that his friend, Aaron is there to help him every step of the way. However, the time spent together, Aaron’s caring nature and Liam’s sense of security in his care led Liam to want something more from their arrangement. Frustrated by the situation he finds himself in, Liam decides to gather his courage and approach Aaron about wanting more.

Sadly, the outcome is not what he expected. Accepting that he can’t continue with the situation as is, Liam lets Aaron know that what their arrangement was over. Surprised at first and conflicted, Aaron accepts Liam’s decision.

What unfolds next is a story of discovery, second chances and letting go.

I loved how the author went out of her way to bring Liam’s emotions to the page. I had no trouble understanding his frustration and his pain at being rejected by Aaron. Likewise, Aaron’s doubts and hesitations about starting something new with Liam were clearly depicted too. I understood where he was coming from and why he was holding back.

Through heartfelt confessions, intimate moments and emotional interactions Aaron and Liam’s connection strengthened. What started as a way for Aaron to help Liam through his anxiety developed into the discovery of Aaron and Liam as individuals. And as the story moved on and emotions came into play, it grew into something more beautiful. They learned, they made mistakes, they became a unit.

I was glad to see how it all played out. There were moments when I wanted to shake some sense into them so they could be honest with each other and move on. Thankfully they found their rhythm and fulfilled their needs – both physical and emotional. And I admit, it was worth the wait.

All in all, a sweet yet sexy read about two friends who found happiness in each other, battled their demons and made their own way in finding what worked for them.

Star Crossed (Battered Hearts #2) by Kele Moon

Star Crossed (Battered Hearts, #2)Rating: 3.75 stars

Published: July 3rd, 2012

Publisher: Loose Id

Available at: Loose Id, Amazon, Barnes & Noble

Synopsis: Heavyweight MMA fighter, Romeo Wellings comes from the hard streets of New York where his family ties to the mafia cause him nothing but pain. His life takes a surprising detour when he crosses paths with the twin sister of his long time enemy. After a steamy one-night stand, he faces the fight of his life, but it’s not in the cage. The secret relationship that blooms between Romeo and his real life Juliet has him battling his family and a dark past rather than let her go.

The only lawyer in her hometown of Garnet, Jules Conner is also a volunteer Sheriff’s deputy and co-owner of a successful MMA training center. Strong and dependable, Jules is always there for those who need her. Until one forbidden night in Las Vegas with Romeo leaves her feeling so alive she can’t stop reaching out to the sexy, bad boy of MMA, even knowing the forbidden love affair could jeopardize everything.

As the tide rises against them and the people they love work at keeping them apart, Romeo and Jules hold onto a dream for a better life together and vow to go down fighting rather than accept a tragic ending.

Review: Romeo is a proud, Italian man who has had a rough life that served to encourage his determination to be the best at what he does. His life revolves around his brothers and his career until an unexpected encounter with Jules Conner. After a night of talking and sizzling sex he is left wanting more – not only from her, but from life.

Juliet Conner is a strong, professional woman who dedicates her life to her work and her family. She’s independent and self-sufficient but underneath it all she wants to love and be loved by a man that is her equal. She is attracted to Romeo instantly and after he rocked her world she convinced herself that it meant nothing and that he was not for her. But after months of continued long-distance communication, Romeo shows up at her hometown to train in her gym and she cannot stay away.

After reading Defying the Odds, the first book in the Battered Hearts series, I was hesitant to read this second intallment. I believed that I would encounter the same issues as before, but I was determined to get through it and I was not disappointed. Although the story gives off a feeling of ‘insta-love’ between Romeo and Juliet, this was not the case. The love between these two developed through shared phone calls, chat sessions and text messages. They got to know each other very well before they really engaged in a relationship and through this communication I got to know them too, which helped me connect to them fully and encourage me to cheer them on to get together.

With complex characters, off the charts hot sexual chemistry and an engaging plot, Kele Moon’s writing was very good. I enjoyed visiting with Clay and Melody and was glad to see how their relationship was holding up. I also liked getting to know a bit more about Wyatt, Jules brother. There were additional characters introduced, including Romeo’s brothers Valentino and Casanova. Wyatt and ‘Nova’ played an integral part to the resolution of the conflict and I can’t wait to read more about them.

I appreciated the fact that the Kele Moon took her time in bringing Romeo and Jules together. They were head-strong individuals with personal issues that affected their relationship one way or the other, but it was Romeo who had the most issues to deal with. He was conflicted about many things, but his main concern came down to his past and how it was affecting his present life. He was an interesting character to get to know and I enjoyed discovering all the layers he had hidden under all that muscle.

Filled with flirtatious dialog, erotic and emotional moments, Kele Moon brought to the page a great follow up book to the series. I look forward to reading more about these characters.

I received this book from Loose Id through NetGalley in exchange of my honest opinion.

Defying the Odds (Battered Hearts #1) by Kele Moon

Defying the Odds (Battered Hearts, #1)Rating: 3 stars

Published: December 20th, 2011

Publisher: Loose Id

Available at: Loose Id, Amazon, Barnes & Noble

Synopsis: When struggling waitress Melody Dylan gives a handsome, lonely stranger a simple gift she has no clue her life is about to take a drastic turn.

The stranger ends up being Clay Powers, a famous UFC heavyweight fighter. Clay’s large build and dangerous fists have always intimidated. People in his hometown keep their distance and Clay is fine with that. Everything changes when a new waitress at the local diner buys him a piece of pie on thanksgiving. Touched by the gesture when it’s obvious she can barely afford to survive, her warm smile and lush body churn up powerful feelings that leave Clay wanting more from her than pie.

Melody is running from her past and the small, country town of Garnet is the perfect hiding place. With an ex-husband after her and scars from her abusive marriage etched deep, the last thing she expects is to fall for a man who makes a living with his fists, but she can’t resist Clay or the tender connection they share.

Finding love in the most unlikely of places, the passion is undeniable, but Clay and Melody know their haunted pasts and unpredictable futures leave the odds stacked against them.

Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual situations, graphic language, and material that some readers may find objectionable: violence.

Review: Melody is trying to make a new life for herself in Garnet, a small country town. A hard worker with a heart of gold, Melody wants to leave her past behind but she fears that the damage has been done and that she will never find love in her life. That is until she meets Clay. A UFC fighter who is physically intimidating, Clay is not what he seems. He is sweet and kind to Melody, behavior she is not used to getting from a man.

Both Clay and Melody were interesting characters, but I could not connect to them at first because their stories were told later in the book. I understood where Melody was coming from but the details of her past weren’t revealed until further ahead in the book and by that time I had already formed an opinion of her. And although I enjoyed Clay, I would have liked him even more if I had known his story from the beginning. As it stands, I like them enough to see them happy, but not enough to be invested in their relationship.

I will be honest with you and tell you that this book was hard for me to get through simply because the relationship between Clay and Melody did not feel real to me. The connection was there as well as the chemistry, but everything happened too fast for me. I would have liked to see more interactions between them before they ended up having sex. Now, I’m not saying that the sex wasn’t good, because it was excellent, but I can’t help but think that it would have been a better read for me if they had gotten to know each other better and communicated more.

The writing was good with emotions thrown in the mix and enough humor to keep it light. I enjoyed the chemistry between Clay and Melody, especially the sex scenes that took place later on in the story after I had gotten to know them better. Kele Moon brought to the page a strong yet conflicted hero in Clay. I appreciated the many layers of him that were revealed to me in the story, which helped me see him as much more than just a sexy man. The secondary characters were a nice addition to the story and each one contributed an integral part to it. I especially enjoyed the camaraderie between Wyatt, Jules and Clay.

This is the first book I’ve read from Kele Moon and it won’t be the last. Defying the Odds is a sexy read with interesting characters and enough emotional undertones to make it a good read for me. I’m looking forward to reading Jules’ story, Star Crossed, which is the next book in the Battered Hearts series.

I received this book from Loose Id through NetGalley in exchange of my honest opinion.
