Extreme Honor (True Heroes #1)
by Piper J. Drake

A Suspenseful Romance
From Forever
Released January 26th 2016

Hot military heroes, the women who love them, and the dogs that always have their backs. EXTREME HONOR is the first book in a high adrenaline contemporary suspense series from Piper J. Drake.

David Cruz is good at two things: war and training dogs. The ex-soldier’s toughest case is Atlas, a Belgian Malinois whose handler died in combat. Nobody at Hope’s Crossing kennel can break through the animal’s grief. That is, until dog whisperer Evelyn Jones walks into the facility… and into Atlas’s heart. David hates to admit that the curvy blonde’s mesmerizing effect isn’t limited to canines. But when Lyn’s work with Atlas puts her in danger, David will do anything to protect her.

Lyn realizes that David’s own battle scars make him uniquely qualified for his job as a trainer. Tough as nails yet gentle when it counts, he’s gotten closer to Atlas than anyone else-and he’s willing to put his hard-wired suspicion aside to let her do the same. But someone desperate enough to kill doesn’t want Lyn working with Atlas. Now only teamwork, trust, and courage can save two troubled hearts and the dog who loves them both…

Evelyn Jones arrives at Hope’s Crossing Kennel to assist in the rehabilitation of a military dog who’s having trouble adjusting after his handler’s death. She’s an experienced trainer whose focus is more on the psychological aspects of the dog’s behavior rather than the physical or tactical. She’s excited with the prospect of working with a dog of this type and hopes the success of the case helps to further her career.

David Cruz works as a dog trainer along with his former-military buddies at Hope Crossing’s Kennel. He is Atlas’s primary trainer. He is determined to help Atlas through his funk and get to the bottom of his buddy’s death and doesn’t appreciate having another trainer in the case. Especially a civilian who has never worked with military dogs. However, after witnessing Atlas’ reaction to Lyn he decides to give her a chance to work with the dog. It doesn’t help the case that he’s insanely attracted to the woman or that her presence awakens his every protective instinct.

The very first thing that attracted me to this book was the cover and my anticipation only grew as I read the blurb. The concept of ‘Hot military heroes, the women who love them, and the dogs that always have their backs” sold me on the story and I couldn’t wait to get started. Sadly, the book didn’t fully live up to my expectations.

Don’t get me wrong, the concept was interesting and the author went to great lengths to bring that to the page. I enjoyed Atlas and everything that pertained to him and/or his rehabilitation. I just believe that the romance got lost among the other elements that were introduced.

The premise was intriguing and kept my interest throughout. I enjoyed the added mystery of who was after Lyn and the truth surrounding the death of Atlas’ handler. I admit, I got somewhat lost among the twists and turns the author brought forth, but I enjoyed the process and the added suspense it brought to the page.

Unfortunately, the romance left me wanting and not in a good way. Lyn and David shared an instant attraction, but their chemistry lacked in intensity and their connection never made it fully into the page. I felt like I was just riding along without any chance of investing myself in these characters’ lives. Mainly, I didn’t get a a full picture of who Lyn and David were as individuals. In truth, we mostly got to know Lyn and how her relationship with her stepfather has impacted her life and not much more. And sadly, we got to learn even less about David. This is turn prevented me from connecting with the character’s on a deeper level. It didn’t help that I couldn’t see more than a thread of a connection between them. I would have preferred less self-analysis on Lyn’s side and more personal interaction between Lyn and David.

As the first book in a series, Extreme Honor worked well. The author did a good job of introducing the main players in the series while giving the readers an inside look into Hope Crossing’s Kennel. It also delivered a bit of intrigued and gave the reader an idea of what to expect in books to come.

Her heart rate had picked up, fluttering at the pulse point under his touch.

“Yeah?” The urge to slide has hands over more delicate areas grew and he couldn’t help running his thumb along the inside of her arm.

Awareness grew in her gaze and she bit her lip as she nodded.

He leaned toward her, focused on her plump lip caught under her teeth.

“What else do you like?”

She opened her mouth to answer but he didn’t plan to let her get a word out. Maybe later. He bent his head to capture her lips.

And seventy five pounds of fur jumped up on his side.

“The hell?”

Lyn gasped. “Atlas!”

Af.” Mindful of the dog’s injury, Cruz gave Atlas a gentle shove.

The dog dropped back to all fours, his tongue lolling. Looking from him to Lyn and back again, Atlas lay back down on his belly.

Jealous. Damn dog was jealous.

Be real. Every dog recognizes a fake. And good men can see through it too.

“I’d really like to help.” Honest. Simple. All the other reasons paled in comparison to this.

“Whatever is going on, you know more about it than I do.” She licked her lips, her mouth gone dry.

His gaze dipped, focusing on her mouth. “I might. I know something. I’m not sure it’s related. But this next question is important.”

Can I kiss you?

Doubtful that was the question he was going to ask. But the moment was drawing out and she very much wanted for him to ask it. “Okay.”

“Do you think I would hurt you?”

“No!” It popped out before she had time to think about it. Anger burned up from her chest and spread outward. She scowled. “Of course n—”

He kissed her.

A Suspenseful Romance
From Carina Press (HQN)

Released November 3rd 2014

Born into a long line of spies, sanctioned killers and covert weapons developers, Beth Faraday carried out her first hit-for-hire when she was still a teenager.

That part of her life—the American spy royalty part—ended one year ago, with a job gone wrong in Afghanistan. The collateral damage she caused with a single shot was unfathomable and, for Beth, unforgivable. She’s worked hard to build a new life for herself, far away from the family business.

But someone, somewhere, hasn’t forgotten what Beth did in Kabul. And they want revenge.

As the Faraday clan bands together to defend Beth and protect their legacy, Beth is forced to flee her new home with the unlikeliest of allies—MI6 agent Raleigh Vick, the only man she’s ever loved. And the one she thought she’d killed in the desert.

There were worse things than having a gun held on him by a beautiful woman, he supposed. Such as glancing down in time to watch the pink heat drain from her honey-gold skin when he told her he was supposed to kill her.

That was worse.

He sucked in a breath as they hit the street, the chilly night air swirling around them as Beth hustled him to the other side of the block. “Not sure going back to yours is the best idea,” he mumbled, hissing as each step jarred the wound in his side. He hadn’t been lying when he told her it was a flesh wound, but he could feel the bullet lodged against his lowest rib, pinching and scraping and being generally uncomfortable.

She shouldered open the front door to her building. “Do you want me to get that bullet out of you or not?”

“I do,” he grated as they ascended the stairs. “But we’ve got a limited window before they send someone to do my job for me.” He let her push him into her apartment, taking a seat at the dining room table while she set the alarm and locked the door.

“And by job, you mean me, right?” She didn’t look at him as she dropped his briefcase to the floor and disappeared down the hall, emerging a moment later with a hefty black nylon case that resembled an oversized lunch cooler. Drawing his surrendered gun from the waistband of her jeans, she replaced it with hers, setting his Ruger aside on the kitchen counter before she unzipped the case and began pulling out various medical supplies: latex gloves, sterilization pads, tweezers, an actual suture gun.

Thirty seconds later, she was kneeling next to his chair. “Lift your hand and take off your shirt.”

“Bossy. I like it.” But he complied, yanking his tie over his head, unbuttoning and shrugging off his shirt, and was relieved to find that the bleeding had slowed to a trickle.

Dark-lashed hazel eyes glared up at him, their gold-speckled gray flashing under the light of the chandelier above the table. “You flirt with me, I make this hurt. Understand?”

4 stars

Henrietta is attending her best friend’s wedding but she would rather be somewhere else. She’s not one for happily ever afters–especially since she lost her soul mate years ago to the war. Thankfully, a handsome stranger joins her table and things get interesting fast.

And interesting they get, indeed!

Matt doesn’t do relationships but he does have an immediate urge to do the beautiful stranger sitting next to him. Her witty comebacks and innocent good looks draw him in like no woman before and when she appears willing to go further with him, he can’t help but be up for the challenge.

What’s the harm in a hook-up with a stranger you most likely won’t ever see again? Well, for these two their encounter soon becomes an issue–especially when Matt finds out Henrietta’s true identity.

I met Henrietta and Matt briefly in Over the Line, the previous installment in the series, when they were attending the same wedding Beth and James were guests in. Henrietta was linked to James since they shared a past and Matt was a friend of the groom. They were referenced briefly in that story which led me to be curious about them.

In this installment we soon find out where Henry and Matt escaped too and just what they were up to during the wedding. Their encounter was brief, but passionate and set the tone for the rest of the story.

I enjoyed the conflicted emotions that arose in Matt once he found out who Henrietta was and how deeply affected he seemed to be by the situation. I admired Matt’s caring and loyal side even as I tried to smother my urge to throttle him for being a fool and not allowing himself the chance to explore his attraction to Henrietta to the fullest.

But thankfully, Henrietta had a back bone. She accepted and understood Matt’s reasons for his hesitation but didn’t back down when she realized there could be something more between them.

What I like most about this series is that the author does a great job of mixing the suspense with the romance without taking away from either of the elements and without overwhelming the reader with useless details. Emmy Curtis goes right to the heart of the matter setting up the plot and conflict while allowing the connection between Henry and Matt to settle and grow.

Once again, the author did a wonderful job in captivating my attention in regards to the plot and making me melt during the sex scenes. The conflict was easy to follow but riveting nonetheless with key players that added the twist and turns necessary to keep me guessing as to what the hell was truly going on.

The were some emotions from both characters thrown into the mix the served to help the reader relate to the character’s situation and state of mind. These ranged from the most subtle to the most intense, allowing the reader to truly understand how deeply connected these two characters had become. I enjoyed their banter, their flirtatious dialogue and their honest confessions. All their interactions led them to establish and grow the initial connection they shared when they met at the weeding.

Keep in mind that although this is the third book in the series it can certainly be read as a stand alone. Although the author references the wedding that took place in Over the Line, the story centers solely on the events and actions that affect Matt and Henry after they met at the wedding.

All in all, a fantastic intriguing read and a great addition to the series!

*I received a copy of this title through NetGalley in exchange of my honest opinion.

Matt heard her sharp intake of breath and wondered if he’d misjudged his attempt at lightening her mood.

There was a second in which he opened his mouth to explain, when there was a shifting in the air around him, and just as his lightning instinct had him reaching for his weapon, a soft projectile thwomped into his face, knocking him backward and off the bed.

“No one makes fun of my pain without incurring the wrath of the pillow ninja,” she hissed.

Relief and outrage vied for pole position as he immediately planned his revenge. He let out an agonized groan.

“Oh my God.” He heard her scrambling over the bed to the foot where he’d fallen from. “I’m so sorry, did you hurt—”

He reared up, wrapping his arms around her legs, and launched her back onto the bed. She bounced like a rag doll as he grabbed the cushion he’d taken from the lobby and swiped at her as she tried to right herself.

“Ooff,” was the only thing she managed to say.

Victory is mine. “Truce?” he asked from a safe distance.

“My hand is caught in the headboard.” She giggled. “I swear it’s not a trap. I’m an honorable foe, unlike you. Look, or feel.”

Still keeping his distance, he put out his hand where he thought her shoulder should be. It was soft. Heat rose in his body.

“Okay, airman, it’s not my breast that’s trapped, it’s my hand,” she said with a totally audible grin.

“Sorry.” He thought he would run his hand up to her shoulder, then her arm to find her trapped hand, but it seemed all his appendages had minds of their own. He hesitated on her breast, feeling it swell beneath his palm. Shit. He stretched his hand out so just the center of it was touching her, and he circled it around her nipple. Its hardness tickled his palm. He meant to move it to her shoulder, but he swore he heard her groan. The sound sealed the deal.

His other hand found her flat stomach. He ran his fingers over her skin, making her shiver. “Does your hand hurt?”

“No,” she whispered. It was a tacit yes to everything else.

He lowered his lips to her stomach and kissed her, feeling it undulate beneath his lips. Kneeling on the bed now, he ran his hands up and down from her waist to her legs, legs to waist, and then with the same motion, he hooked her shorts around his fingers and yanked them down. She gasped. He grinned in the dark.

“You’re kind of at my mercy now, aren’t you?” he said.

In an instant she wrapped her legs around his waist and tipped him over onto his side. Before he could recover, she rolled him over and sat astride him.

“I’m sorry? What did you say?” In the shadowy darkness she whipped off her tank. He could barely see her in the dark. No way. Nakedness or death? He grabbed her waist and held her as he sat up and pushed her down toward the foot of the bed. He used the few seconds he was upright to flick open one side of the curtain covering the small window. A faint blue light lit the room. Just enough to see her in.

“I guess you weren’t really that trapped, then?”

“Not that trapped.” She smiled up at him, and he was gone.

He ripped his shirt off over his head and was about to undo his jeans when Harry beat him to it.

Her delicate fingers played with his fly, flickering touches on his hard dick through the denim. Grazing her nails along his length until he was desperate to feel her friction. As if she read his mind, she flattened her hand and pressed hard against him, making him groan and push himself against her.

She undid his fly, and when the heat of her fingers touched his flesh he closed his eyes and allowed his whole body to feel her.

Enough. He wanted her, right now. Stripping off his jeans, and managing to extract a condom from his wallet without fumbling, he retook the bed. He slid his whole body across hers touching every part of her with every part of him. She fit him perfectly. In every way.

Young sexy woman over retro background

Amazon | Barnes & Noble

This guy is a fucking idiot.  No joke, I don’t understand how someone can be like this.  I will never understand it.  He was directed to me by an acquaintance or some shit, and I’m doing them both a favor, but he’s got some really fucked up ideas about what kind of business I run.

I read over his email again, probably for the hundredth time.

Noah, he starts, and that’s the only sane word he says in the entire thing.

He wants a girl, so we have that part straight.  I only work with women.  Nothing against men, they just don’t interest me that much.

Anyways, this guy wants me to find him a girl.  Younger is better.  He says he doesn’t care how old she is, but I’m not into that creepy underage shit.  I get that he’d probably like that, but I’ve got morals and limitations here, as fucked up as that sounds.

It’s not just that, though.  Young, alright.  I can find someone that’s college-aged easily enough.  Those are usually the easiest girls to deal with, too.  Not enough experience to know any better, so they’re easy to capture, and then they fall in love so fucking easily it’s sickening.  It’s like you just chain them to a wall for a week and after that they’ll do anything you say, they’ll just get on their knees as soon as you come in, slobber on your cock until you get off, and even thank you for cumming all over their face.

There’s more, though.  Young, yes.  College-aged, sure.  On the shorter side, which I had to ask him for clarification about and he replied with anything under 5′ 5″.  Got it, I can work with that.  Not overweight, either.  Sure thing, boss.  What’s overweight?  He comes back with some arbitrary number that doesn’t mean anything.  Under one-hundred-forty pounds.  Weight doesn’t mean anything because I can do something about their weight, but it’s good to have guidelines like that.  It’s easier, too.  If they have restrictions on looks, then you want to know what they’ll look like before you go through with the whole process.

Overweight girls are usually really fucking attractive once they’ve lost even just twenty pounds.  It’s kind of fun, too.  When I kidnap one of them and get them in shape, I feel like I’m really making a difference in the world.  Self-esteem, right?  They’re easy to control, too.  Show them how fucking hot you’ve made them and they practically melt at your feet, even after all the other terrible shit you’ve done to them.  It’s real sweet.  Makes me want to pretend I’ve fallen in love before I send them to their buyer.

I can deal with this guy’s requests about age, height, weight.  I asked him about looks and he got back to me that he wanted someone cute.  Cute, sure, what the fuck does that mean?  Give me an example here?  He shows me a picture of some celebrity who somehow hasn’t posed nude in a men’s magazine yet.  I didn’t even know it was possible to find a girl like that.  She’s got that sort of heart-shaped face, with a bubbly personality and the cheeks to match.  When she smiles, it makes you want to pinch her cheeks and then fuck her hard.  The innocent type of girl.  A little shy.  Not dumb, but naive.  She might have a lot of book smarts, but she doesn’t know anything about reality.  I get it.  I understand the sort of girl he wants, and it shouldn’t be too hard to find her, because that’s basically every girl in the history of the world.

And her name has to be Chastity White, he says.

What the fuck?  We’ve gone back and forth about this, and I just do not understand.  I asked him if it has to be White?  Can it be Chastity Wight?  Same pronunciation.  No, he says.  What about LeBlanc?  Same idea, right?  No, he says.  Does it have to be Chastity?  I can do this a lot easier if I’ve got a few more options for a first name.  I give him suggestions, too.

Purity?  Grace?  Faith?  No, no, no.  Motherfucker.

Look, we can just rename this bitch.  I will give her a new name.  She doesn’t need a name.  Her name is literally the least important detail about her.

Deeper Than Need (Secrets & Shadows, #1)

Trinity moved to Madison with her son in an attempt to make a fresh start. Little does she know that buying the old house in town will be affecting her life nor that the man she hires to fix it will also be a cause in turning her world on its axis.

Noah has had a rough past. He goes through the motions of his life but it isn’t until he sets eyes on Trinity that he truly starts leaving. But the little town Madison has some surprised for him and soon him and Trinity find themselves fighting for their lives.

Shiloh Walker does it again. This time around she manages to bring together Trinity and Noah–two people who have had it rough in life and yearn to move on. She also brings to the page a riveting mystery that, although easy for the reader to figure out, has many twists and turns that make it that much more interesting to analyze.

From the previous novellas in the series I learned how the author likes to mix the suspense with the romance. This time around we have Noah paired with the new girl in town, Trinity.

Although somewhat hesitant to give into their attraction both are drawn to each other and ultimately have no other option than to give in to the feelings they bring out in one another. I liked Noah and Trinity together. They had amazing chemistry but it was those few moments when they were completely open with each other that seal their relationship for me.

I wish I could have gotten a bit more of their romance, but Shiloh Walker more than made up for it by truly bringing in the mystery and the suspense. I liked how the conflict was set and developed. Enough details were shared to give the reader an idea of what was happening, but not enough to know what would be happening next. In the end, the resolution was swift and well managed but with enough unanswered questions to keep the reader guessing as to what might be coming next. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

All in all, an an exciting and riveting story with a sweet romance thrown into the mix.

*I received this title in exchange of my honest opinion.

Sweeter Than Sin (Secrets & Shadows #2)

Adam has had a rough past. A recovering alcoholic that takes refuge in women to try to keep his demons at bay, Adam can’t seem to find the peace he so needs. Especially now that his bar serves as the go-to place to gossip about the latest findings into the investigation that has turned the sleepy little town of Madison upside down.

It doesn’t help that the one woman he has never forgotten returns to Madison bringing with her dangerous secrets that can harm him and her as well.

Secrets. Danger. Passion. Surrender.

Shiloh Walker does it again and this time around the danger is closer than ever, the secrets are darker and the atmosphere more sinister than in the previous book. I have to hand it to the author, she went well beyond my expectations in this installment of the series.

Adam was a great character to get to know. His past was rough and his demons were relentless in their haunting. It was heartbreaking to see him struggle with everything that was happening but it was a treat to see him find some peace among the chaos.

Lana was a great character too. I admired her tenacity in making things right and how far she had come in life in regards to her past. She still had her demons, but she had managed to get a handle on them.

I enjoyed Adam and Lena together, mainly because I admired them as individuals. Their connection was palpable and their chemistry superb. I loved the moments when they were open with each other and how they supported one another along the way.

Once again, the mystery and danger was at the forefront of the story. I appreciated the fact that Shiloh Walker brought some of the darkest subjects to the page and that she did it without it overwhelming. Every details was clear but subtle, never over-sensationalized. This is turn helped me to understand the characters better without turning me off the story as a whole.

The Cronus Club is behind the mess of it all. Leads are pursuit, secrets and revealed and through it all the emotions continue to run rampant in every one involved. This was not an easy read and I don’t think it’s for every one. What worked for me was that the author focused on the emotions and the people. She made sure that I understood how emotionally affected were the characters by the events that took place which in turn made me interested in their emotional well-being.

This is the second book in the series and although it’s been said that it can be read as a stand alone, I wouldn’t recommend it. There were a few times when I was glad i had read the previous book before tackling this one.

As I’ve come to expect from Shiloh Walker, not every little thing was settled or wrapped up in a pretty bow. Although a lot of questions were answered, some still remained. I’m certainly looking forward to the next book in the series.

All in all, a riveting mystery with dark secrets, a hot little romance and emotions abound.

*I received this title in exchange of my honest opinion.

by Cynthia Eden

A Romantic Suspense
Released September 15th 2014

New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Cynthia Eden continues her sexy “Mine” romantic suspense series with…MINE TO HAVE.

Is he a hero…or the villain?

When Elizabeth Ward sees Saxon Black rushing into the backroom of The Blade—a low end bar in Miami—she isn’t sure if he’s there to save the day…or just to raise some hell. But she’s being held hostage, and he’s her best hope of survival. Within minutes, she’s away from the jerks with the guns and riding fast and hard on the back of Saxon’s motorcycle.

Death stalks them.

Saxon has been working undercover for far too long. When he finds sexy Elizabeth—with a gun to her head—he knows he will do anything to keep her safe. But once he gets her away from her abductors, the threat to her isn’t over. Someone has put a price on Elizabeth’s head, and if Saxon can’t keep her safe from the danger stalking her, then she’ll be dead.

Their lives are both on the line.

As their enemies close in, Elizabeth and Saxon must go on the run. And the longer they are together, the hotter their attraction for one another seems to burn. Saxon vows not to let anyone hurt her, no matter what he has to do, because he’s falling fast for Elizabeth. He’ll stop the killers on her trail, and then he’ll have her. Forever.

4.5 stars

Even though I have not read her latest books, I count Cynthia Eden as one of my favorite authors–especially in the Romantic Suspense genre. What I like most about her writing is that she manages to bring in a sizzling romance to the page while still delivering a riveting suspense-filled story. I loved how she keeps a constant pace including all details necessary to move the story along but never overwhelming the reader with useless information.

With Mine to Have Cynthia Eden delivers once again!

This is Saxon’s story which I understand made an appearance in the previous book along with his brother Victor. His life as an undercover operative has taken a toll on him and he’s ready for it to end. But his plans are put on hold when Victor asks him for a favor.

Elizabeth has no idea why she’s in the situation she’s in at the moment and having a stranger come to her rescue confuses her further. She doesn’t know who to trust, but is not like she’s going to miss her chance to escape her captors.

Soon Saxon and Elizabeth realize that the danger is once again upon them and they find themselves thrust into a situation where in order to survive they must learn to trust each other. Add to that the instant attraction that’s always present between them and you’ve got yourself an enticing sexy little read.

What I loved most about this story was Saxon. That man was the perfect example of a protective alpha-male that will put his life on the line for the woman he has fallen for. I admit it was hard for me to believe Saxon and Elizabeth’s sudden connection, but Cynthia Eden made it easy for me to understand how that could come to be. Taking into consideration that it’s not every day that you find yourself in this type of situation–relying on a stranger and having to put your life on their hands–and the way the author went about voicing their doubts and portraying the situation they found themselves in helped to convince me that Saxon and Elizabeth’s connection, although fast and unusual, was also real.

I appreciated the fact that although the villain was easily identifiable, Cynthia Eden added enough twists and turns into the story to keep me guessing as to what would happen next. I found myself tapping the hell out of my tablet, curious to know how they would get out of certain situations and what else would be thrown in their path.

Of course, I also tapped the hell out of my tablet during the sex scenes. Hell, I loved them so much that I highlighted them like a sex fiend. Yes, they were hot but they were also very telling. Saxon made no secret that he wanted Elizabeth but when they got together I loved seeing him lose some of his precious control. *sigh* The chemistry between these two and their sexual encounters alone deserved a couple of stars!

Keep in mind that although this is the fifth book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone. Personally, I’ve only read the first book in the series and had no difficulty following the story along. Cynthia Eden gave enough background information to understand what had taken place prior to this book, which helped a lot.

All in all, a fast-paced riveting sexy little read with action packed moments and intriguing characters that shared amazing chemistry.

“You can let go now.” His voice was the deepest, darkest rumble she’d ever heard, and it actually took a few seconds for his words to sink in.

When they did, she was horrified. Her hands flew away from him and she shot off that motorcycle. A bad move, really, because her thighs were still shaking from the ride, and Elizabeth hit the ground.

Smooth move.

She pushed up fast, though, and staggered to her feet. Elizabeth tossed away her helmet and ran.

Unfortunately, she didn’t get far. A big, strong hand caught her shoulder and spun her around. In the next breath, her back was being pushed into the nearby brick wall, and Saxon had her hands pinned above her head. He held her easily, her wrists trapped in one of his hands.

“Didn’t we cover this?” he muttered, and his voice, if possible, had gone even deeper. “No screaming, no running—”

“No fighting,” she whispered back to him. “You said no…fighting. You never said I couldn’t run.”

He laughed then. A sound that was as deep as his voice and sent shivers racing over her body.

A man wasn’t supposed to laugh when a woman was terrified. She knew nothing about the guy except for the fact that she’d seen him shoot two men and beat the crap out of at least two more. And he’d said he…wanted her.

For an hour.

“Please, let me go.” Elizabeth wasn’t above begging, not then. She just wanted to survive that night. To get back to her apartment and pretend this whole terrible nightmare had never happened. “I won’t go to the police, I promise. I won’t tell them anything about you.”

His head came closer to hers. She couldn’t discern much about him in that moment, it was too dark, but she’d seen plenty in that terrible little room.

Saxon. He’d been huge, filling that doorway. He had to be at least six foot three, and his shoulders had been so wide, his arms heavy with muscles. He wore a faded t-shirt and loose jeans. He’d fought with a cold, vicious fury, and he hadn’t even broken a sweat when he’d taken down his enemies.

I thought Kurt was scary. He’s nothing compared to this guy.

“I don’t want to let you go.”

Those words terrified her. No, he terrified her. He leaned even closer. She could feel the light stir of his breath against her cheek. She had a flash of being tied in that chair and looking up—and into a pair of dark and deadly eyes.

And I asked him for help? A desperate woman would do anything. And she was desperate right then.

Boroughs | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | ARe

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

The lead character, Anthony Parglietto has some very strong views on the subject of the crime fitting the punishment- views that I share. The whole argument of retributivism has also fascinated me, although it is a pretty gray area. I had an idea for a man who was supposed to promote justice and follow the law having these views and thought it would make an interesting, if controversial story. He would be conflicted, judged and perhaps even punished himself for any actions he took that didn’t fit society’s norms. So I mulled it over, decided I really wanted to write a romance-y thriller, and Love and Punishment was born.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I’ll see something on the television, hear someone say something on the tube and perhaps the germ of an idea will form. I also simply wake up with an idea, perhaps a left over remnant from a dream, and then that makes its way into my notebook for a future plot. I also see hunky men all the time doing my ‘research’ and think ‘Whoa, he would make a great policeman/hacker/Warlock’ and hey presto! I have the guy, now I just need the story. They aren’t usually far behind.

Does music play any type of role in your writing?

I wrote Love and Punishment to the wonderful tones of Adam Levine from Maroon Five belting in my ears. He truly inspired me to keep writing, just so I could keep listening to him and ignore the rest of the world. I have used music and my favourite tunes in some of my books, so anyone reading my books knows my musical taste inside out. Noel Gallagher’s ‘High Flying Birds’ was featured in Cassandra by Starlight and of course, Sneaker Pimps’ ‘Small Town Witch’ features in Waiting for Rain in the pole dance scene, as well as in my book trailer. You can see the whole thing and the sexy dance performed by the brilliantly talented Andre Corey here: Susan Mac Nicol You Tube

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I used to be able to sit down and knock out 4000 words a day and finish a 120000 word book in a matter of a month. It was a golden time. And that was with a full time job too. Now I find I am more deliberate in my writing; that I think more about things, watch my grammar, my editing and try and give my editor a much more polished book than the one I sent over my very first time. This book was sent back to me with a myriad of corrections and took a lot of time to get into the market. I have to say I have learnt an incredible craft in writing for the published market, and my editor now claps her hands in glee after she’s read one, and tells me ‘minimal edits’ which is pure music to my ears. So the challenge for me in getting the book finished with the time I have now (my current job is a lot more hectic than any before and I am working 14 hour days) and keeping to my daily writing schedule of at least 3000 words a day.

What are your current projects?

My current project is working on Book 2 of my Men of London series. It’s called ‘Sight and Sinners’ and carries on with Taylor’s story where Book 1 left off. I’m hoping to have this finished in a couple of months, if not sooner. I’m also working on edits for the third book in my Starlight series, which is the final chapter in this whole story. I’ve also got plans to write a really epic story once I can slot it in, which I don’t want to say much about at the moment. It will be called ‘Living On Air’ and is about survivor’s guilt and the consequences of being the only person to survive a really horrific family event. It’s going to be very emotional, full of angst and relationship ups and downs and of course, romance and love-–and sex.

4 stars

Flynn is a reporter than suddenly finds himself in the path of a serial killer–the very one his lover is investigating. His partner, Anthony is determined to solve this case. But torn between his protectiveness towards Flynn and his duty to his job, Anthony is having a hard time keeping his composure.

I admit, I had a hard time getting into this story mainly because I’m not used to experiencing a suspense story from all characters involved. However, once I sorted them out in my head I was able to get into it without any problems.

I enjoyed how she interlaced the romance elements of the story with the suspense without taking away from either one. Flynn and Anthony’s relationship had already been established when the story began, but the author continued to build on that bond. She brought their connection to the page showing how deeply Flynn and Anthony felt for one another while still bringing in the physical aspect of their relationship. I enjoyed their rapport and how committed they were in making it through this difficult time in their lives.

Susan Mac Nicol did a wonderful job in keeping the intrigue going throughout the story, even after divulging who the Bow-Tie Killer (BTK) was. She kept adding twist and turns, keeping me guessing as to what was driving the BTK and on how every thing would come to play out in the end. I liked that she she didn’t pull any punches in giving the reader glimpses into the BTK’s thoughts–going into the nitty gritty of what drove him to kill and how completely screwed up his thought process was. He was a smart, conniving man who held no constraint in regards to the violence he inflicted. Kudos to the author for writing one hell of a villain!

I especially liked how everything came to a close. The resolution of the conflict was well written with an abundance of suspense and danger. I appreciated the fact that she went out of her way to show how every one involved came to be affected by the BTK’s actions and how she brought it all together in the end to bring closure to all those affected.

All in all, an intense psychological thriller that draws you in and keeps you riveted until the very end with a few steamy moments thrown into the mix to round it all up.

Their kiss grew in intensity and Anthony’s hands strayed over his backside, pulling Flynn onto his lap, their hardened cocks pressing against each other. Flynn pressed back, his hands impatiently tugging Anthony’s shirt out of his trousers. Anthony stopped his assault on his mouth to look at Flynn with darkened eyes.

“Hell, tesore mio, you taste so good.” His words tailed off as Flynn stroked his stomach, feeling the hardened muscles of his abdomen as he finished the job he’d started, unbuttoning the shirt completely and sliding his hands across his lover’s broad chest. Anthony groaned softly.

“So do you,” Flynn murmured against his mouth. He chuckled softly as Anthony’s fingers slid under his loose tee shirt and caressed his nipple, one of Flynn’s really needy erogenous spots, which caused him to take a deep breath at the sensations that touch was causing.

Resist Me (Change Me, #1)
by A.O. Peart

Released August 30, 2014

One fateful morning changes everything.

Lisbeth Anderson, the lone eyewitness of a shocking murder, believes the FBI witness protection program may be the only way for her to survive. But when a powerful explosion reduces the safe house to ashes, killing all of the FBI agents on duty, will she turn to a perfect stranger for help?

Ethan McCoy, an ex-Marine-turned-firefighter, has never really cared for any woman. He lives his life to the fullest, enjoying the bad boy stigma and cultivating a particular taste for dominant sex. Girls come and go, allowed to stay only long enough to satisfy Ethan’s wild appetite.

One morning at dawn, Ethan’s fire brigade is called to a fatal house explosion that levels the structure. When he pries open a trap door to the hidden panic room under the house, he finds a gorgeous, though disheveled brunette. Lisbeth instantly turns Ethan’s world upside down, and he’s overcome by the burning desire to protect her, no matter the consequences.

3.25 stars

The blurb is pretty accurate so I will move forward with my review.

What attracted me to this story in the first place was that sense of eminent danger that surrounded Lisbeth as the sole witness of a murder. I also liked that Ethan was an ex-Marine turned firefighter. Perfect combo, right?

I liked Lisbeth. Even though she was deeply affected by the events she witnessed, she tried her best to keep her composure. And when the time came to face danger head on did it without second guessing herself. I had to admire her for just being able to still think positively after all she had been through.

Ethan was great too. He was man who never committed to more than one night with a woman, so getting to see how Ethan struggled with the feelings Lisbeth was bringing out in him was a treat to read. He was the perfect embodiment of the alpha-male hero–protective, commanding and ssexy as hell.
I enjoyed him thoroughly.

I do have two issues that stood in the way of me loving this story.

Plot development and conflict resolution. For me, these two go hand in hand. I loved the concept behind the story and appreciated the bits and pieces of details the author revealed as the story progressed. However, there were just that–bits and pieces. It wasn’t until the conflict started sorting itself out that all the information came pouring in all at once.

Which leads me to the resolution of the conflict. I like my Romantic Suspense stories to keep me at the edge of my seat, guessing who the villain is and what’s going to happen next. I didn’t get that from this story. Now, don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed the action scenes and how the author went about bringing them to the page. I also loved seeing Ethan in action and how Lisbeth kicked ass. But that was all there was. Everything came to a head all at once without giving me the chance to really get into the story or get that sense of urgency I expect from a suspenseful story.

And that brings me to the ending. Can you say abrupt? I’m all for a cliffhanger, those I can handle just fine. What I don’t like is when the story ends abruptly without giving me an inkling as to what could happen next.

Resist Me is the first book in the Change Me series and as such it served its purpose. I can’t wait to read more about the these men, especially Jack.

It is my understanding that each book is a stand alone which sucks because I was left with lots more questions than answers in regards to Ethan and Lisbeth’s relationship and the threat on her life. Here’s hoping the next installments bring more suspense, action and character development.

All in all, an interesting and enjoyable first book in a series. The characters were complex, the concept interesting and the chemistry between the main characters palpable.

*I received a copy of this title in exchange of my honest opinion.

“It might be a bit slippery down there, so careful.” Ethan indicated the damp soil by the collapsed tree.

That little rasp in his voice was distracting. It stirred something in me. Again. Something I shouldn’t have felt now. And his touch—his large, long-fingered hand, grasping mine. He emanated some raw power and decisiveness. This was too much to handle, too confusing. Maybe it was just me? No doubt I was confused and weirded out by all that had happened recently in my life. How could I even think straight anymore?

With a long breath, I concentrated on stepping down from the log. I didn’t want to think about that soothing warmth surging from Ethan’s skin into mine. As soon as I was back on the ground, I pulled my hand back and put both of my hands in my pockets. I looked up at the blue sky visible between the treetops. A few white wisps of clouds were stretched over our heads. They were slowly shifting and reshaping, some of them breaking into smaller pieces.

A distant, sweet memory resurfaced: ten-year-old me, lying in a warm grass, watching similar, wispy clouds constantly change shapes. There was a rabbit, a boulder, a flower, or a jumping cow. I recalled how happy that made me, but now I knew it was only because my imagination took me away from reality of my sad, lonely childhood. Nevertheless, watching the clouds slow-dancing in the sky above me brought those beautiful memories back. And I was thankful for remembering them.

I wanted to feel this enjoyment of freedom and simple pleasure forever. All the worries that bogged me practically every moment of each day have suddenly disappeared. It was as if some distant door opened at the end of a long, dark tunnel, and I was instantly transported into a happy place; as if I stepped over a threshold and onto the sun-filled spot that emanated such positive and soothing energy.

My eyes still closed, I breathed the air fragrant with a tree sap and damp moss, my face upturned to the sky, the sunrays warming my skin. This was what I needed—a moment of a complete quiet, the worry-free feeling that finally uplifted my spirit. A distraction.

I don’t know how long I stood like this, but when I looked around, Ethan was sitting on the log a few feet away, watching me with the tiniest smile on his lips. Did he understand what I was feeling? And just like that, for a flitting moment I believed that we actually gazed into each other’s souls.

He slowly stood up, his eyes locked with mine. Taking a few slow steps, he came very close to me. There was something predatory in his stride, but that didn’t frighten me. Instead, it made me long for his touch. I didn’t move. Ethan’s hands gently ran over my arms. His smile disappeared, and his handsome, masculine features rearranged into an intense, possessive look.

This alone—his expression and his caress—left me breathless, my heart pumping. I froze in anticipation. My lips parted. His right hand came to the back of my neck. His fingers wrapped in my hair, gently tugging my head back until my face upturned toward his. His other hand pressed on the small of my back, bringing our bodies dangerously close.

He kissed me, and I truly welcomed that kiss. No, I actually embraced it.

At first, it was tender, as if he wasn’t sure how I would respond. When I didn’t pull back, his lips skillfully explored mine. His tongue darted from between them, teasing me, testing my reaction. I parted my lips and let him in. He took my mouth with such hunger as if he wanted to kiss me forever.

His sharp intake of breath, send a wave of hot desire through me. I’ve never been kissed like this—so tenderly but intensely and adeptly at the same time. He tasted of mint toothpaste and smelled of a delicious mixture of soap, something musky, and something very male.

I moaned into his mouth. He inhaled again, and his tongue licked deep inside my mouth, sliding over mine, possessing me. This was the sweetest torment I’ve ever experienced. I was lost in this kiss; I was lost in this moment. The feel of serenity and peace I felt just seconds earlier was quickly replaced by the sexual tension; by the pure, shameless desire.

Ethan pulled away, panting slightly, his expression laced with longing and pain. It sobered me in an instant, and I stepped away from him. I hung my head, taking deep, calming breaths. This wasn’t the way. This shouldn’t have happened.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I should’ve never done that. It won’t happen again.”
