He opened his mouth to order her to drop the MP5 she had aimed at him, but nothing would come out. It was like she’d robbed him of the ability to speak. Shooting her wasn’t an option, though. And the idea of arresting her didn’t make him feel any better.

There’s a new gang of criminals in town who are organized and ruthless in the extreme. When Eric Becker, along with the rest of the Dallas SWAT team, ends up in the middle of a shootout, he immediately senses werewolves-a lot of them. Turns out, the new bad guys are a pack of wolf shifters.

In a spray of gunfire, Becker comes face-to-face with the most gorgeous woman he’s ever seen. Becker does the logical thing. He hides her and leaves the scene with the rest of his team.

Jayna Winston has no idea why that SWAT guy helped her, but she’s glad he did. Ever since she and her pack mates got mixed up with those Eastern European mobsters, everything had pretty much fallen apart.

So what’s a street-savvy thief like Jayna going to do with a hot alpha-male wolf who’s a police officer?

Paige Tyler’s Favorite Fun Loving Hero!

This December, Paige Tyler releases the third in her action-packed SWAT series, IN THE COMPANY OF WOLVES. To celebrate the release of IN THE COMPANY OF WOLVES, Paige Tyler stopped by to tell us about one of her favorite fun loving heroes in pop culture and to share an excerpt showcasing her own hero’s fun loving side!

Paige Tyler: Everyone loves reading about alpha males, right? But of course, you can’t have a single dimensional character that’s just hardcore alpha all the time. It comes off as flat or just plain irritating. Most of the time you want to let your alpha have a lighter side, just to keep things interesting. One of my favorite fun loving heroes from popular culture is Dean Winchester!

Jensen Ackles plays a monster-hunting bad boy along with his brother Sam (Jared Padalecki) on my favorite long-running television series Supernatural. Both brothers are incredibly hot, but Dean is the one more likely to crack jokes and live in the moment in contrast to Sam, who can be a little moody sometimes. He’s lived through so much violence and pain—every friend and family member has been killed during the eleven season run of this series—but he can still appreciate an attractive woman or a big cheeseburger. I mean, the first thing he went for after spending a year in hell was a burger. One really funny tidbit about Dean is that the original developer of the story (Eric Kripke) based the character of Dean on—you guessed it—Han Solo, because he wanted him to have that swagger that Solo was able to pull off with ease. One of the things I love about Dean is the bond he has with Sam. It’s what gets them both through the day even when facing monsters, angels, and demons that are way out of their league.

An Excerpt

One of the Albanians shouted something from the front of the store in his own language, following it up with an order to the omegas to stop wasting time and get the damn safe open. Becker ground his teeth. He should have simply kidnapped Jayna and her entire pack. Then he could have just walked into the loft and shot every one of these idiots—twice.

“Watch them,” he told Jayna, motioning to the security guard and two women. Turning, he left the break room and jogged down the hallway toward the back of the building.

“Get them back on the safe!” the Albanian driver shouted at him from the front room.

Oh yeah, sure. Stop two morons from raping a woman and get them back on task. What the hell was he—a daycare worker for omega werewolves?

Shit. If this was how criminals behaved, it was no wonder he and his SWAT teammates took so many of them down. They were too stupid to live. Then again, maybe this was how Gage felt some days. The SWAT pack could occasionally be a little stupid too. Becker’s current predicament was a shining example of that.

The omega standing guard in the hallway outside the manager’s office glared at him. “We got this. Go back and babysit the old folks.”

What a complete ass, Becker thought as he walked up and punched the guy in the face. The werewolf flew backward and bounced off the wall, bleeding like crazy from a broken nose as he fell to the floor in a dazed heap. He was still moving around though, reminding Becker that it was as hard to knock out an omega as it was to knock out an alpha. He’d have to remember that.

Becker strode into the office to find the store manager on the floor beside her desk, the other omega—the one who liked to play with his platinum medallion—leaning over her menacingly. He’d torn her blouse and was telling her all the horrible things he planned to do to her if she didn’t open the safe. The idiot was so intent on threatening her that he didn’t realize Becker was there until he yanked the guy to his feet and spun him around, then smashed the back of his head into the nearest hard object he could find—the safe panel. Becker pounded his head into the safe a few times before letting him fall to the floor. The asshole was definitely out cold.

Becker turned and looked at the shop manager. She cringed away from him, terror in her eyes as she tried to hold the tatters of her blouse together. He really wished he could pull up his ski mask. Seeing him like this definitely wasn’t helping.

Do you have an alarm button in this room?” he asked in his softest, least intimidating voice.

The woman stared at him for a moment like he was insane, then motioned under the desk with a shaking hand.

“Would you mind pushing it for me?” he asked.

Now she looked really confused. But she slowly reached under the desk and poked around until a loud alarm started ringing.

“Thanks.” Becker bent down to take the platinum medallion out of the omega’s vest and slip it into his pocket. “By the way, that diamond merchant you bought from in New York sold you out to a really bad guy. You probably don’t want to buy from him anymore.” Turning, he jogged out of the room and down the hallway to the front of the store. “Time to leave. Moron hit the alarm.”

Jayna was heading his way in a flash, the two Albanians right behind her.

“What about the safe?” the driver asked.

Becker shook his head. “It’s a no-go. Our guy smashed the keypad.”

The Albanians muttered something in their native language and shook their heads, as if they’d seen this coming. They stepped over the omega who was still rolling around in a daze on the floor in the hallway and raced out the back door. In the distance, sirens echoed in the air. About damn time. Becker motioned Jayna out.

“What about him?” she asked, jerking her head at the werewolf still trying to get to his knees.

Becker nudged the omega with his boot, pushing him back down. The guy looked like he really didn’t want to bother getting up this time.

“What about him?” Becker said, holding the door open for her.

Sexy, handsome SWAT team members — check!
Sassy, relentless heroine — check!
A sizzling undercurrent of chemistry — check!
Wolf shifters — check!

On the surface this story has the right mix of elements to make it a perfect read. But for me, it needed a bit more world building. Don’t get me wrong the author did a great job of introducing the overall concept and paving the way for other installments in the series. I especially enjoyed how she went about bringing the concept of THE ONE to the page. Different, but still keeping it simple for the reader.

Now, I enjoy my PNR to take place within a contemporary world, but I also like to come out of the story with a complete idea of the world the author came up with. Except for the SWAT team’s extra abilities and the concept of THE ONE, this read as any other romantic suspense with sexy, capable men and the woman who wins his heart.

Other than that, I can honestly say this was a very enjoyable read. The characters were intriguing and shared a palpable connection. Their chemistry was off the charts and the plot had me intrigued until the very end.

All in all, a good start to the series. One I am definitively going to follow!

A lifetime of possibilities…

4 stars

Huntley and Melissa have been partnered for missions several times through the years. Both have been in committed relationships before and have not given into their attraction–until this latest mission. Determined to find the man behind a poaching ring, Huntley and Melissa soon find themselves looking out for two jaguar cubs and in a rescue mission to find their parents before it’s too late.

I have to say that this story was different from I had expected. I read Jaguar Hunt and liked it very much, but what that story lacked in the development of a connection this one had in spades.

I very much enjoyed how the author brought Melissa and Huntley’s connection to the page. From the very beginning–even before any sort of romance took the page–I could see that these two had the type of easy camaraderie that I’ve always enjoyed. I liked that they were independent, head-strong and easy-going. Huntley and Melissa’s interactions varied from candid to humorous and from sweet to sensual which only served to showcase how deeply connected they were.

As I expected, Terry Spear did a wonderful job in drawing me into Huntley and Melissa’s world. I enjoyed every aspect of their mission simply because the author painted such a wonderful picture of this world. Be it when they ran through the jungle or were on the hunt for the poachers, every event brought about a sense of expectancy and adventure.

This time around the author spiced it up a bit by making a couple of jaguar cubs part of Melissa and Huntley’s mission. Needless to say that with these two cubs present in the story, some sweet and funny antics would ensue. I loved every part of this element of the story. Especially watching how Huntley took care of them. It showed a whole different side of him that I would have never seen if these adorable cubs weren’t part of the story. As if I needed another excuse to fall in love with the man!

Of course, I can’t forget to mention the chemistry between Melissa and Huntley. At first it was a subtle presence. However, as the story progressed and they got to spend more time together it was easy to see the sparks flying from their attraction to each other. And when they finally did get together? It was everything I had anticipated it would be.

Although this is the fourth book in the Heart of the Jaguar series it can be read as a standalone. There’s mention of characters from other books and plenty of backstory about the JAG organization and the shifter world these characters live in. But the story focuses on the mission at hand and the romance that develops between Melissa and Huntley. I have not read book 1 or 2 and was able to follow the story along without any problem at all.

All in all, a fantastic story with a bit of humor, some adventure and plenty of sizzling chemistry between two jaguar shifters to round it all up!

*I received a copy of this title in exchange of my honest opinion.

Once inside the park, Melissa and Huntley trekked for miles, not seeing much of anyone or anything, not with the way the rains were coming down in torrents in the steamy rainforest. They hadn’t found any sign of Jackson. Just a few hikers, hardier than most, who endured the rains and mud to see glimpses of wildlife here and there. When Melissa and Huntley finally set up camp for the night, she felt wet and miserable. And she couldn’t believe how Huntley looked like he could go on for several more hours when she was totally beat.

She should have regretted not sleeping more last night. But making love to him was what she’d needed. Not that she thought anything permanent was likely to come out of the relationship.

Just the same, she’d needed to feel sexy and wanted and loved. Huntley gave that to her and more. So when he’d wanted more, she just couldn’t say no, despite knowing that she needed a good seven hours of sleep to feel normal the next day.

She was thinking of Jackson and how he had slipped away from them the first time. She hoped they’d find him soon. Then gunshots fired off in the distance.

Her heart skipped a couple of beats.

“We don’t have time to take down the tent. Do we go as humans or jaguars?” Huntley quickly asked her.

She loved that about him—how he always included her in the decision making. “If they’re rangers or police, I want to go as humans. Even if they’re poachers, I think we’ll be safer if we look like we are ‘tourists.’ We can always shift when we get there if we need to.”

“Sounds good.”

At least they were armed with tranquilizer guns this time.

Now a confident master dominant, Bowie discovers Channing again through a video of a consummate sub, one who Bowie knows he needs to find once more.

When Bowie shows up on his doorstep, Channing feels like a teenager again, all confusion and need. He doesn’t date his own kind, only humans, and he’s not in the market for a full time master. Bowie is impossible to deny, a force of nature, and while both men know they’ll have to think about Emma eventually, now is the time to see if they can get to know, and love each other, all over again.

The trip was designed to give him time. Time to figure out what he was going to say to Channing Lanier when he saw the sorry son of a bitch again.

He could start with “Hey, you rat bastard. Amazing how you came out after you dropped me like a hot rock.” That would be fun. Or maybe, “I thought you weren’t into spanking and bondage, and your precious asshole was sacrosanct, but now you’re a bottom in the underground BDSM scene,” would work better.

Bowie wouldn’t even be going to see said bottoming asshole if it wasn’t for the flyer tucked neatly away in his briefcase.

Tawny Catnip.

Their Emma was a fucking stripper?

A Vegas stripper? The revue was touted as a classy burlesque show and topless nightclub called Catnip Crazy.

Hell, the crazy thing was that both of his ex-lovers had called him a goddamn perv.

Him. Because he’d wanted them both. Because he’d wanted Emma over his lap. Because he’d wanted to see Channing bound and on his knees between the both of them.

Blurb(s): It’s been three years since David broke up with Michael. He’s ready to find his mate. Only the only man he’s attracted to at all is a hookup from a bar. After hours of passion they separate and David only discovers the next morning the man was his mate. Where can he find him again? And what is his name?

JK Publishing | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | ARe

David woke late Sunday afternoon with a headache, which didn’t seem fair because he hadn’t drunk very much the night before. Damn head cold! He still remembered every minute of the night before. Part of him wished he’d broken his own rule and let the handsome hunk stay over. He got what he wanted, he would have blown me off when he saw me in the light of day. Getting out of bed he stumbled to the bathroom sneezing. He decided to take a hot shower, the steam would clear up his sinuses, for a while. He wanted a clear head so he could convince himself it was time to settle down and find a forever love. No more casual sex!

Setting the temp as hot as he could stand, he stepped into the oversized stall. The room quickly filled with steam and his nose started running. He gave a fleeting thought to the scents he was washing down the drain before he remembered his sheets. His cougar wasn’t very happy with him for kicking HH, the handsome hunk, out of their bed and was pouting by being silent. Of course his cougar was generally subdued when he was showering.

After twenty minutes in the steam his muscles were loose and he could breathe again, for now. Stepping out of the shower onto the bathmat he grabbed a clean towel off the shelf and after a quick rub down, wrapped it around his waist. Taking a look in the mirror he decided to take some cold

medicine and spend the day being lazy. He was already envisioning a long afternoon on the couch snuggled in a blanket with a pitcher of lemon water and some chicken soup within easy reach. I’m wallowing, because I already miss him.

First though, he needed to strip the bed and put the sheets in the wash. Later, he knew he’d want cool fresh sheets to sleep in. And right now he was as awake, alert, and as energetic as he was going to be for the rest of the day. Walking through the door to the bedroom the scents from his sheets hit him all at once. His inner cat roared and David was so surprised he didn’t stop the shift.

Leaping onto the bed in his puma form, he rolled around in the sheets before sneezing. Sitting up in the bed he had a sheet wrapped around him, the end flopping over his head. He could see his reflection in the mirror on the opposite wall. Big tough cat, not! Mate! We found our mate!

Shifting back into his human form allowed him to say what he was thinking. “Shit! Shit, shit, shit!” Untangling himself from the bedding he began to pace around the room. I don’t even know his name!

Bite Me (Pride, #9)

I have to say that to this day Shelly Laurenston has not disappointed me with this series. Way back when I started this series, I thought it would be comprised of a couple of books, but it has become so much more. Different species of shifters, conflict keeps twisting and turning, laugh out loud humor and sizzling chemistry–I’ve loved it all!

And this latest one is no different.

Livy Kowalski was hilarious. I loved her attitude! She gave as good as she got but underneath it all she had a great heart. One that once touched, loved deeply.

Then there’s Vic Barinov. I love those bear shifters! Them and their honey always crack me up. Plus he’s sexy, loyal and caring. Livy drives him crazy, but he likes the girl (a lot!) which made his frustration with her that much more entertaining.

Once again, Shelly Laurenston delivered her trademark humor with a hot yet sweet romance and paired it up with the ever-present danger of humans trafficking the shifters.

Of course, there was also the cameos by the past characters. Dee-Ann popping in and out unnoticed, Blayne an her quirkiness, Bo with his itineraries, Jess and her Pack, the crazy-brilliant clan of jackals and Dez with her bad-ass attitude.

I loved it and can’t wait for more!

A Paranormal Romance
Released June 3rd, 2014
From Sourcebooks Casablanca

An agent and a jaguar-shifter chase trouble, and each other, through the jungles of Belize…

Agent Tammy Anderson has a reputation: she prefers to work alone. So when she’s paired up on a mission with jaguar-shifter David Patterson—who’s only recently been released from jail—to say she’s less than thrilled is a understatement. Until she realizes that this sexy agent has what it takes…

Soon, what started as an “easy” mission to locate a missing jaguar takes the pair to Belize, where they’re chasing down two renegade teen shifters who know more than they’re telling. As the action heats up, can they keep their minds on the job and off of each other?

Amazon | Barnes and Noble | iTunes

4 stars

After getting a lead in a missing jaguar case, David asks to be paired up with Tammy, the agent assigned to the case. Not one to work well with partners, Tammy is skeptical about working with the handsome shifter. But David proves not to be easily dismissed and soon they find themselves running the jungles of Belize where both agents engage in more than the pursuit of the case.

This is my first book by Terry Spear and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. An action-packed story with a great mix of humor and romance and a mystery that didn’t relent until the very end, Terry Spear made sure to garner my attention while gaining another fan.

I liked Tammy from the very beginning. She was strong and independent and a perfect match for David. She kept him on his toes and gave as good as she got. I loved watching her succumb to David’s charms after all the struggle she put in fighting her attraction to him.

David was also a great character. I enjoyed his sense of humor and his determination. I liked that he was as affected as Tammy but what I loved the most was that he admired her tenacity and recognized her work as an agent. He treated her as an equal while still looking out for her. *swoon*

As for their romance, I do have to say that it played out a bit too fast for me. Thankfully, Terry Spear made a great effort in bringing their connection to the surface. I just wished I could have seen it being developed fully. However, through their case interactions, flirtatious banter and funny bickering I could easily glimpse how easily they related to each other, thus making it easier for me to cheer them on.

Keep in mind that although this is the third book in the Heart of the Jaguar series Terry Spear did a wonderful job of elaborating about the world she had built in the previous books while still focusing on the current story, so it can certainly be read as a stand alone. I will be picking up the previous books in the series and looking forward to her other books.

All in all, an intriguing suspenseful read with a wonderful mix of romance, humor and action-packed events.

“Good night.” David closed his eyes, but he couldn’t stop taking in deep breaths of her jasmine soap and she-cat scent mixed into one delightful fragrance. He couldn’t ignore the beat of her heart – or his – that told him he was way too turned on, and that she was feeling the same way. He couldn’t help feeling the heat of her body and wanting to ratchet it up a few degrees, starting with a kiss.

A kiss. Hell, he’d never gone to bed with a woman when it meant total hands off. But lips…they didn’t count, did they?

She’d closed her eyes, but she wasn’t sleeping. She hadn’t pulled away from him, giving him her back. That meant something. Didn’t it?

He could ask. And she could say no.

He could kiss her, and when she got ready to slap him, he’d tell her it was a good-night kiss. And it would be. Unless she wanted more.

He could get lucky and she’d kiss him back.

Somehow it didn’t seem right to go to bed with a woman and not at least kiss her good night.

She opened her eyes to see him looking down at her – well, he was judging her lips, but when they curved up a bit, he lifted his gaze to meet her eyes and saw she was watching him.

“What?” she asked.

He couldn’t say it. David Patterson, who had no trouble interesting women in kisses and so much more, couldn’t say it.

“Don’t…tell…me. You want a good-night kiss,” she said, but he wasn’t certain whether she was offering or…not.

Not about to lose the opportunity, he placed his hand under her chin, lifted her face, and waited only the briefest period for her to pull away if she wasn’t in the mood for this. When she didn’t, he leaned down and kissed her mouth.

While they waited for the healer to come and give them a status update, Elena stayed by the bed. She ran her hands over her son’s form. She hadn’t seen his jaguar in many years. She noted that even in this form he had some scars. If a shifter was unable to see a healer and stayed in human form until a wound healed, he would scar. Elena was shocked at some of the scars on her son’s body and she could only see one side of him.

“Chuy, I do not think our son has been working on trucks during his time in the army,” she said in a quiet voice.

“You are right, he didn’t want to worry us. But I know my boys. And you know Raoul, he always wanted to be a soldier,” he said, there was pride and worry in his voice.

Before she had a chance to answer there was a knock on the door right before it opened.

“Hey, I don’t know if you know who I am…”

“Are you, Craig?” asked Oscar from where he stood near the door.

“Uh, yeah, but that’s not why I stopped by. Um, I’m not sure how to say this exactly but I have this guy here…um, well, the thing is he says that Raoul is his mate,” he finished with a red face. That announcement got everyone’s attention.

“Why is he so sure?” asked Marianna.

“Well, I had to help Raoul shift, so I had to touch him. Then this guy was the next person I helped and when he shifted, he said he could scent his mate on me.”

“And how does he know that you aren’t his mate?” Marianna asked the cute young man next.

“I’m straight! I mean, I don’t have a problem with gay people or anything but um…”

Before he could say anything else, his father, Thorston, appeared behind him and he pushed the door open the rest of the way and walked in.

“Is there a problem?” he asked as he shut the door behind him.

“Your son was just explaining that another patient here is claiming to be my son’s mate,” explained Chuy.

“I see,” he said before turning to his son, “Craig, do you know where this patient is?”

“Mom took him up front to see if the Vasquez family had arrived. He wanted to meet them and find out if he could see Raoul.”

Before anyone else could say anything there was another knock at the door and Ingrid stuck her head in. “Oh good, you’re all here. Come in Leo and I’ll introduce you,” she said, pulling the door open and walking through with Leo not far behind.

“It’s getting awfully crowded in here. Why don’t we leave Mama and Poppi to talk to him and we’ll go get everyone some breakfast. Raoul is sure to wake up hungry,” said Arturo. They were all curious about the new man. But they didn’t want to scare Raoul’s mate away by overwhelming him right away. He’d have plenty of time to meet all of the family.

They all agreed and started filing out of the room. “You just want to go off and canoodle with your mate,” Marianna said to Arturo as they walked down the hall.

“Technically, we’re still considered newlyweds so it’s acceptable behavior,” said Brody in response as he reached over to give his mate’s ass a squeeze.

As the door shut on their children Elena turned to the doctor. “Before we meet this young man, would you give us an update on Raoul’s condition? Why did he need help shifting,” she asked anxiously.

Leo also paid close attention to what the doctor had to say. He wanted to know what was wrong with his mate. Even in his human form he could already separate all of the scents in the room. His shifter senses were

already increasing. It was almost too much he would have to learn to deal with it. As the doctor spoke, he couldn’t stop himself from walking over to the bed. He stepped up to the opposite side from where his mate’s mother and father were standing.

“Your son’s injury was quite severe and almost beyond my capabilities to heal. It’s actually still healing. He has not yet regained the use of his legs and won’t until the swelling along his spine subsides. I do expect him to make a full recovery, but he will need a few more healing sessions. I told him to shift every three to four hours for the next day. Craig here will help him if he needs it. By the end of next week he’ll be recovered enough that I can release him.”

Disturbed Connections (Otherkin Spirits #2) by Kia Zi Shiru

18296754Rating: 4 stars

Published: August 9, 2013

Available at: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords

Synopsis: A werewolf and a vampire, forbidden love. What could go wrong?

CHRIS, a werewolf on the run from his abusive clan, hides in a vampire house. ALEC, a vampire who has comfortably lived in the house for years, has no intentions to ever leave it.

Their connection is obvious from the first time they meet. But the house rules are strict, werewolves and vampires can not date. Unable to fight their attraction and unwilling to leave, they instead choose to hide their love.

Then Chris’ old clan finds him and takes him back. Will Alec ever see Chris again?

Review: Wow, that blurb was spot on. What COULD go wrong? Well, unfortunately Chris and Alec are about to find out.

Chris has been hiding from his clan for the last couple of months and thanks to his friend Travis has found a new place to hide – a vampire house. Although he know who Alec is, Chris has ever met him personally. He only knows what Travis has told him and he is still intrigued. So when Alec makes a friendly approach to welcome him into the house, he is not surprised at the sudden connection that sparks between them.

Alec has crushed on Travis for a long time. Always loyal and supportive of Travis, he can’t help but be sad and disappointed that Travis is moving-in with his boyfriend. However, he still believes that if he were to stick it out, Travis will one day be his. So when he suddenly finds himself unequivocally drawn to Chris, Alec is more than a little surprised and a lot confused.

Forging an immediate friendship, both men spend time together talking, reading and just being with each other. But it isn’t until Chris’ first full moon in the house, that their connection develops into something more – something more powerful, more undeniable.

I have to say that after reading Disturbed Fate I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, but I was utterly mistaken. If in the previous book, I wanted to smack Marc and Galen for taking it slow, this time around I was just about ready to kick some serious booty if Chris and Alec didn’t get their mojo going. Good God, the sexual tension between those two was unbearable at times!

Alrighty, moving on.

Once again, Kia Zi Shiru delivered a fantastic read with some thrills, a bit of the sweet and a lot of the sensual. I enjoyed how she brought the character’s struggles and desires to the page. I understood perfectly where each one was coming from, why they hesitated and how much they desired the other.

Chris was a treat to read. He was both sweet and passionate with a caring and vulnerable side that endeared him to me. But Alec was so much more. Poor guy, my heart went out to him from the moment he admitted his attraction to Travis was one-sided, but he burrowed in deeper each time he had to hold back his feelings for Chris.

The author did a great job in bringing forth the depth of Chris and Alec’s connection. Every shared moment and every emotion felt by Chris and Alec were aimed to impact the reader and enable them to connect to these characters fully. At least that’s how it felt to me. With every moment spent with these characters my desire to take them away from it all increased.

I didn’t find this story to be paranormal in nature. Except for having a vampire and a werewolf as main characters, that was about it. However, I don’t think that it made a difference. The concept behind the story was well-executed and the romance, the conflict and its resolution all worked together to make this story a very enjoyable read for me.

Although Disturbed Connections is the second book in the Otherkin Spirits series it can certainly be read as a stand alone. This story focuses on a different set of characters and their story is the main focus of the book.

I received this title from the author in exchange of my honest opinion.

The New Wolf (Building the Pack #1) by R.J. Scott

18211370Rating: 3 stars

Publisher: Extasy Books (August 1st 2013)

Synopsis: After a hate crime leaves one of them near dead, Veterinarian, Josh Nolan and Cop, Connor Vincent are starting a new life in Black Creek, a remote town on the edge of the Adirondack State Park, Vermont.

Josh is taking over his grandfather’s practice and Connor settles into working as one of only four of the sheriff’s office covering the area.

When Connor pieces together a whole list of unsolved crimes going back fifty years he puts his life, and that of his partners, in danger.

An attack, a bite, and suddenly everything becomes frighteningly clear. Black Creek is where a new wolf has to find a whole new way to look at his life.

Review: Josh and Connor moved to Black Creek to start a new life together after living in the city for years where Josh was a veterinarian and Connor a cop. Now that Josh is part-owner of his practice and moved to Black Creek, he’s hoping the change in scenery will help relax Connor and bring them even closer. Connor is missing the big city, but is adjusting just fine. To keep his mind entertained during the quiet times he starts digging into cold cases of kidnappings and disappearances. When he goes deep in the forest to check a lead, his life is changed forever. Can Connor and Josh overcome this new obstacle thrown at them or will their plans crumble?

I enjoyed The New Wolf. Both Josh and Connor were interesting characters to get to know. I loved their relationship and the fact they were committed to each other. I could see their connection ran deep and their love for one another was something special. I enjoyed their chemistry and their banter.

In regards to the story, I feel like there was something missing. I know this is book one of a series but I still was curious to know more about the Black Creek pack and how they came about. After a somewhat slow beginning establishing Josh and Connor in the town, I felt like the pace was rushed too much. It felt like some details were skipped and some of the more interesting points were skimmed and not examined further.

Having said this, I believe The New Wolf is a good start to a new Building a Pack series. I’m curious to know more about them and looking forward to the new installment.

I received this title from the publisher through Manic Readers in exchange of my honest opinion.
