A Navy SEALs Fun Fact from Anne Elizabeth

Being in combat changes things. Anyone who has ‘boots on ground’ knows that, and so does the family—tread gently.

Master Chief Declan Swifton of SEAL Team Five rolled over the side of the Rigid-hulled Inflatable Boat and slid soundlessly into the Pacific Ocean. The RIB took off without even a comment from the operator, leaving Declan to sink farther into the drink.

The temperature cooled as he swam away from the surface. Fish skirted the edges of his thighs, small shimmers of movement against his skin. He scissor-kicked his way forward. The ocean currents caught him, dragging him in the direction they wanted to go, toward shore. He lay with his arms at his sides, frog-kicking only. Above him, he could see the afternoon sunlight glistening and frothy foam chasing away the glassy surface. Down here things were different…calmer. Peaceful, in a way few souls would understand, and yet he knew that even he would have to surface soon.

His lungs would start to ache and burn, his gut would begin to feel as if it would cave in, and that would force him to either head topside or drink in the salt water. But there was still time. This was the water in front of Imperial Beach and the apartment he lived in. He knew it very well.

Scanning the ocean floor, he gauged it would be about thirty seconds until he reached one of the many rocky sandbars out here. He’d have to pull up before then, or the force of the current would smack him against the side.

As his body began to complain, he used both arms and legs to draw himself upward. Breaking the surface, he opened his mouth and drew in air like a thirsty man would gulp water.

The waves bounced him like a buoy. The tide was coming in and the wind was picking up momentum. Looking at the sky to the east, he could see that there would most likely be a storm today. Over his should, to the west, he spied a wave coming his way large enough to take him to shore. It would reach him in about thirty seconds.

Dec took a long, slow breath and appreciated the sun dropping into the horizon. The colors were extraordinary; orange and gold dappled the horizon as the blazing ball of light attempted to sink before the moon lifted higher in the sky.

His hands flexed, cupping the water. It had been a hot day, and the sun’s rays had heated the top of the ocean, making the surface feel like a warm bath, loosening his muscles. Three months ago, he’d been in waters so frigid, with actual ice caps—the memory still made him cold. But here, the Pacific Ocean off California’s Imperial Beach, was a slice of heaven.

Coming in from the east were some nasty-looking cumulonimbus clouds. Seeing the lightning arc way off toward the distant desert, he decided it was time to go in, and right on cue, here came a perfect wave.

Swimming at top speed, Declan pushed his way through another changing current, one that sought to drag him into faster-moving waters. He went over a higher sandbar, having no intention of going to Mexico today, and increased the reach of his stroke. With single-mindedness he worked his way into the more placid surf as he homed in on a large stretch of beach.

The SEAL felt a few sea lions swimming around him, and one nosed him in the gut and another in his back a few times, assessing whether or not he’d play. Not this time, my friends. He continued swimming without engaging. If he stopped to play, he’d be out there for hours.

Switching to the breaststroke, his arms protested. His platoon had switched their training this month to desert-warfare techniques, and he’d been sweating his balls off in the heat. He managed to learn a thing or two, even now, after all of his years in the Teams. But it felt good to be back in the ocean, his element. He’d live in the deep blue like a Jules Verne character if he could.

Paige Tyler’s Favorite Fun Loving Hero!

This December, Paige Tyler releases the third in her action-packed SWAT series, IN THE COMPANY OF WOLVES. To celebrate the release of IN THE COMPANY OF WOLVES, Paige Tyler stopped by to tell us about one of her favorite fun loving heroes in pop culture and to share an excerpt showcasing her own hero’s fun loving side!

Paige Tyler: Everyone loves reading about alpha males, right? But of course, you can’t have a single dimensional character that’s just hardcore alpha all the time. It comes off as flat or just plain irritating. Most of the time you want to let your alpha have a lighter side, just to keep things interesting. One of my favorite fun loving heroes from popular culture is Dean Winchester!

Jensen Ackles plays a monster-hunting bad boy along with his brother Sam (Jared Padalecki) on my favorite long-running television series Supernatural. Both brothers are incredibly hot, but Dean is the one more likely to crack jokes and live in the moment in contrast to Sam, who can be a little moody sometimes. He’s lived through so much violence and pain—every friend and family member has been killed during the eleven season run of this series—but he can still appreciate an attractive woman or a big cheeseburger. I mean, the first thing he went for after spending a year in hell was a burger. One really funny tidbit about Dean is that the original developer of the story (Eric Kripke) based the character of Dean on—you guessed it—Han Solo, because he wanted him to have that swagger that Solo was able to pull off with ease. One of the things I love about Dean is the bond he has with Sam. It’s what gets them both through the day even when facing monsters, angels, and demons that are way out of their league.

An Excerpt

One of the Albanians shouted something from the front of the store in his own language, following it up with an order to the omegas to stop wasting time and get the damn safe open. Becker ground his teeth. He should have simply kidnapped Jayna and her entire pack. Then he could have just walked into the loft and shot every one of these idiots—twice.

“Watch them,” he told Jayna, motioning to the security guard and two women. Turning, he left the break room and jogged down the hallway toward the back of the building.

“Get them back on the safe!” the Albanian driver shouted at him from the front room.

Oh yeah, sure. Stop two morons from raping a woman and get them back on task. What the hell was he—a daycare worker for omega werewolves?

Shit. If this was how criminals behaved, it was no wonder he and his SWAT teammates took so many of them down. They were too stupid to live. Then again, maybe this was how Gage felt some days. The SWAT pack could occasionally be a little stupid too. Becker’s current predicament was a shining example of that.

The omega standing guard in the hallway outside the manager’s office glared at him. “We got this. Go back and babysit the old folks.”

What a complete ass, Becker thought as he walked up and punched the guy in the face. The werewolf flew backward and bounced off the wall, bleeding like crazy from a broken nose as he fell to the floor in a dazed heap. He was still moving around though, reminding Becker that it was as hard to knock out an omega as it was to knock out an alpha. He’d have to remember that.

Becker strode into the office to find the store manager on the floor beside her desk, the other omega—the one who liked to play with his platinum medallion—leaning over her menacingly. He’d torn her blouse and was telling her all the horrible things he planned to do to her if she didn’t open the safe. The idiot was so intent on threatening her that he didn’t realize Becker was there until he yanked the guy to his feet and spun him around, then smashed the back of his head into the nearest hard object he could find—the safe panel. Becker pounded his head into the safe a few times before letting him fall to the floor. The asshole was definitely out cold.

Becker turned and looked at the shop manager. She cringed away from him, terror in her eyes as she tried to hold the tatters of her blouse together. He really wished he could pull up his ski mask. Seeing him like this definitely wasn’t helping.

Do you have an alarm button in this room?” he asked in his softest, least intimidating voice.

The woman stared at him for a moment like he was insane, then motioned under the desk with a shaking hand.

“Would you mind pushing it for me?” he asked.

Now she looked really confused. But she slowly reached under the desk and poked around until a loud alarm started ringing.

“Thanks.” Becker bent down to take the platinum medallion out of the omega’s vest and slip it into his pocket. “By the way, that diamond merchant you bought from in New York sold you out to a really bad guy. You probably don’t want to buy from him anymore.” Turning, he jogged out of the room and down the hallway to the front of the store. “Time to leave. Moron hit the alarm.”

Jayna was heading his way in a flash, the two Albanians right behind her.

“What about the safe?” the driver asked.

Becker shook his head. “It’s a no-go. Our guy smashed the keypad.”

The Albanians muttered something in their native language and shook their heads, as if they’d seen this coming. They stepped over the omega who was still rolling around in a daze on the floor in the hallway and raced out the back door. In the distance, sirens echoed in the air. About damn time. Becker motioned Jayna out.

“What about him?” she asked, jerking her head at the werewolf still trying to get to his knees.

Becker nudged the omega with his boot, pushing him back down. The guy looked like he really didn’t want to bother getting up this time.

“What about him?” Becker said, holding the door open for her.

A Note from M.L. Buchman

Dear Reader,

Welcome to my newest series: the first women of Delta Force. I can’t begin to tell you how much fun this was to write.

Most of us know little more about Delta Force than the Chuck Norris movies (which leave a lot to be desired) or perhaps we only know the name. In researching my Night Stalkers series, I kept running into these guys. They are the elite of Special Operations Forces. They are at a level of SEAL Team 6, and most would argue they were even beyond that. They are the ghost and shadow warriors who helped take down drug lord Pablo Escobar, capture Noriega, were undoubtedly behind the locating of Saddam Hussein, and are the main reason that Al-Qaeda abruptly stopped being a topic in the Iraq War when over three thousand of their leaders were swept off the board.

Yet the Pentagon states that they don’t exist. Fascinating.

And while they often work with undercover female operatives, no woman has yet managed to kick in the front door on one of the most arduous selection programs in the military.

I decided to change that.

Carla Anderson stepped forward to take the challenge. She is a not a woman out to prove she can match any man, she’s out to prove that she can beat them at their own game. And that was the first thing that I loved about writing this series.

In the Night Stalkers, the women were strong, excellent, and determined.

To be a Delta Force woman, Carla had to add enough attitude and drive to plow through all obstacles which just made her so much fun. Nothing was off the table when it came to her attitude or her actions.

And that was the second thing I came to love about this series launcher, Target Engaged. Being Delta Force, they really do operate outside so many bounds. They are sent to do the tasks that no one else can. To that I added the additional challenge that Robert Ludlum gave to Jason Bourne (though I’m quoting the movie): “I don’t send you to kill. I send you to be invisible. I send you because you don’t exist.” I’m pretty convinced that this is part of Delta’s mission.

It is occasionally said by retired Delta Force operators (as the on-duty ones never speak): “If we’d been sent in to take down bin Laden, you still wouldn’t know how it was done.” To bring that to life gave me a permission as a writer to run my characters into hard and strange places and be just a little gonzo doing it.

But writing is a give and take, and I can’t begin to tell you how much the characters I created shaped my telling of this story. I like to think that they had as much fun as I did bringing this story to life.

I hope that you enjoy the reading even half as much as I enjoyed the writing!

M.L. Buchman (the Oregon Coast, November 2015)

Get to know the Carla, and the entire Delta Force team by reading the first SIX chapters of TARGET ENGAGED for free! Just click here to download them! To get you started, we’ve included the first few pages below:

Carla Anderson is not only a woman, she’s a warrior. And one determined to make it as a Delta Force. Smart, strong-headed and confident in her abilities, Carla is not intimidated by the big alpha males she encounters during the elimination process. Not even Kyle Reeves, the man ahead of the herd at every turn.

Kyle Reeves has always trained to be the best. He has also worked alongside the best. But never has he been as intrigued by a fellow soldier as he has been about Carla. It’s no wonder he wants her–on his team and on his bed. It seems she has it all–fantastic looks, great stamina and a kick-ass attitude that has carried her to the top of the pack.

But with training over, they find themselves deeply immersed in their first mission. Soon Carla and Kyle will learn that none of the training they endured to become a Delta will come in handy when it comes to guarding their hearts.

I have to say, it’s been a while since I’ve read a book of this magnitude. As this was the first book I’ve read by this author, I didn’t know what to expect from the story. I’ve read my share of suspenseful romances, so I came into the story with some expectations and I am happy to say that this book surpassed them all.

Action-packed scenes, detailed training exercises and missions, intriguing characters and one hell of an intense romance has made Target Engaged one of my favorite read of the year.

As the first book in a series, Target Engaged served its purpose to the max. The author spared no expense in immersing the reader in what it takes to be a part of Delta Force. Although I found the book riveting through its entirety, I count the first half of the book as the most enjoyable, since it details the training exercises the candidates must complete to progress in the program. Not only did I get to know Kyle and Carla and what drove them, I got to see an exceptional group of individuals give their very best. So when they went into their first mission, I was already invested in these individuals. I wanted to see them in action, see what set them apart and revel in their success.

I also enjoyed how the author went about bringing the romance element to the page. Yes, the chemistry between Kyle and Carla was intense and jumped off the page, but to my surprise that wasn’t what kept me glued to my tablet. I was fascinated by the intricacies of the mission and the way the author went out of his way to make me a part of it. But although the romance took a back seat to the rest of the story, I appreciated the way Buchman presented Kyle and Carla’s struggles in coming to terms with their emotions as the mission ran its course.

All in all, a fantastic start to a series. I will definitely be looking for more from this author!

*I received a copy of this title in exchange of my honest opinion.

Releasing Your Inner Wild Child

My name is Monica Campbell and I’m a reformed wild child. Growing up in Vegas, trouble was easy to find and hard to resist. But these days, I’m a responsible job-holding, tax-paying, tooth-flossing citizen. I don’t dance on tables or sneak off to dive bars. I even had that unfortunate tattoo permanently removed. I’ve changed my ways for good. Most importantly, I’ve sworn off bad boys. I’ve had my fair share of them, believe me, and men who look like trouble usually are. Now I only date serious men with life goals and steady paychecks.

But then Calum Hughes roared into town with his hot British accent and even hotter body. We shared a moment five years ago, a moment I’ve never gotten over. So what’s a girl to do? I’ve tried to steer clear of him, but he’s …amazing. Wait, did I say amazing? I meant persistent. The man won’t leave me alone. Why does he have to be so charming? I can’t quite figure him out, and trust me, I don’t want to. I’m on the wagon where bad boys are concerned, and that especially includes Cal.

As long as I stay out of his orbit, I can focus on my work and not his lopsided grin or his rock hard abs. But he doesn’t play fair. The more I try to avoid him, the more he comes around, asking me to go play and tempting me to return to my wild child ways. That’s not going to happen, do you hear me? I’m over men like Cal. Been there. Done that. And I had that fugly tat to prove it. I’m notreverting back to bad habits.

Yet every time he kisses me or speaks with that deep, scratchy voice, I want to lose myself in him. He makes me miss the uninhibited side of myself. I thought I’d closed that chapter of my life for real this time, but Cal…, maybe I could let a little bit of my wild side poke through. That wouldn’t be so bad, right? After all, it’s not like Cal’s sticking around for good. He never stays in one place for long. He’s a professional drifter.

The question is, can I give in just a tiny bit, and still keep my heart intact? They say there’s a first time for everything.

Monica’s Tips for Releasing Your Inner Wild Child (Without Getting Arrested)

1.       Wear sexy lingerie. You never know when that bad boy might decide to peek under your blouse, and you do not want to be caught in white cotton.

2.       Know when to give into temptation. Sometimes, when a man looks that delicious, you can sin all night and make a fresh start in the morning. Kind of like a diet. A sex diet.

3.       Drive your man’s car as fast as possible—he won’t like it. Don’t let this dissuade you. After all, it’s not your Mustang on the line, now is it?

4.       Get over that fear of public sex. You don’t have to be a complete exhibitionist, but the thrill of almost getting caught adds to the fun.

5.       Go ahead and dance on the table. Wild Child motto: no regrets!

6.       Be careful with your heart. When you start having feelings, it gets real. So don’t, I repeat, don’t fall in love, no matter how tempting he is. Trust me on this one.

With the multiplatinum success of his band, Syon thought he had everything he’d ever wanted…and then he met Kate. Sexiest Rock Stars (And What Makes Them So Hot!)
with Dawn Ryder

Rock Stars…some are just lick-able….

Let’s face it, there is something about a man in leather, who can bring a stadium to its feet. I know there are all sorts of different music out there but heavy metal in all its formats has a certain, gut-wrenching appeal that just gets girls wanting to squeal. So here’s one of my favorites:

I’m going with a classic, Elvis Presley – This icon had a lot of the elements I felt were essential to my hero, Syon, in Rock Me Two Times. One was his love of his music. Elvis actually recorded more songs than most musicians ever do. He wanted to have a television show that showed him and his band working out new music, but was told it wouldn’t hold the attention of their audience. That sort of devotion to his craft amazes me. Elvis had music in his soul, I mean, he actually thought in it. I wanted Syon to be that way, to have his music be the root of his entire being and to have Kate come in and recognize the artist in him.

There are so many types of passion, and music is one that the world stops and listens to. If I’m lucky, someday, one of my books will captivate a reader just as completely as some of the great songs out there that everyone knows.

Dawn Ryder

The Staples Center was roaring.

It sounded like a tsunami coming in, or a freight train passing three feet in front of her face. It was more than sound; there was a vibration that traveled through her body, all the way down to her bones. There was a current in the air that practically crackled with excitement.

The bodyguard-slash-security guy showed Kate up to a private box. She followed because she didn’t want to squeal like a little girl and ask to be taken home.

She’d never lost her head like this before.

It was embarrassing on an epic scale. She was pissed at herself for rolling over so easily for a man who wouldn’t recall her name by the end of the night.

The box had plush seats and an open rail overlooking the stage. The lights went down, and the drummer started up. The beat was infectious, taking over her heart until she was sure the muscle was keeping the same rhythm.

The crowd roared again, thrusting their hands up into the air as two guitars joined the drummer. Her nipples puckered again, her memory offering up an image of Syon arching back as he played those final chords. It was like he was pushing the music out of himself, almost as if he were giving birth.

On stage, he was just as raw.

Syon took command of the space completely. The audience ate him up.

And were they screaming. Syon worked them just as skillfully as he did his guitar. He really was lord of all he surveyed. Kate discovered herself leaning forward, being drawn toward the spellbinding energy pulsing on the stage. Sitting still was impossible; her body wanted to move in time with the notes Syon was wringing out of his instrument. She became fixated on his hands; the way he worked his fingers was downright dominant.

Her teeth were clenched  by the time the last song finished, she was panting softly and felt wrung out.

But it was fucking wonderful. She was drifting on a high and collapsed back into her padded chair, her composure scattered around her like fall leaves. She felt spent but amped up at the same time.

Fangirls were definitely climbing the respect ladder in her book.

Okay, so she was drooling over a rock star like some high schooler, but at least B.O.B.—her battery-operated boyfriend —was waiting for her at home. All in all, the buzz was worth the slightly stinging blow to her pride, because in some corner of her mind, she believed she should be grown-up enough to realize fantasies weren’t mature. So disappointment wouldn’t stalk her in the wee hours of the night.

A hollow feeling in her gut warned her she was hoping in vain.

As Syon and the rest of the band left the stage, Kate indulged herself in a long moment of reflection. Syon had worked that guitar until it wailed. He had to be hell in bed if he applied even half that effort to pleasing his partner.

“So, what’d you think?”

She jumped, grabbing the armrests of the movie theater-style chair. Her eyes popped open wide, and her belly did a triple flip when she found Syon watching her.

“Ah…” Her tongue suddenly felt like a wad of cotton in her mouth as she scrambled to stand up and turn around to face him. “It was fantastic…”

He grinned at her, a huge, arrogantly pleased expression that showed off his perfect teeth.

God, she wondered if he knew how to bite…

This November Kate SeRine releases the first in her riveting new romantic suspense series, Stop at Nothing. To celebrate, the hero of Stop at Nothing, FBI Agent Kyle Dawson, has agreed to answer a quick Q&A for us!

What’s your least favorite part about your job?

(Sighs) Some days are pretty rough. There are just some cases that get to me, you know? You learn how to disconnect, compartmentalize to keep it all at a distance. But some days you just can’t. And it’s hard to talk about those experiences with people who’ve never been there, so it can eat away at you.

3.25 stars

FBI Agent Kyle Dawson returns home after having some problems during a case he was working on in New Orleans. The news of his transfer is not such a problem for him, it’s running into the woman who broke his heart three years ago that has him weary. He decides to make contact first so that Abby is not surprised by his return. He isn’t surprised when his call goes unanswered.

Abby Morrow works at the Sheriff’s Office–alongside Kyle’s father. She recently accepted some freelance work and uncovers some information that she needs to investigate further. She doesn’t expect to be in harm’s way, but when she and her nephew are threatened Kyle is the first number she calls.

Stop at Nothing is the first book in the Protect & Serve series and served its purpose well. Not only did it set the ground for other upcoming books, but it also gave the reader a chance to get to know the array of characters that will be (hopefully!) having their stories told.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I found I like her writing. The story was suspenseful without being over the top and the plot intriguing enough to keep me guessing as to what would be happening next.

My only regret in this story was that I didn’t get to experience Kyle and Abby’s connection first-hand. The author did make a reference to their past relationship, but not enough to convince me of their ‘love’. What was more frustrating was that their connection didn’t make itself known either when they reunited.

Kyle and Abby spent a lot of time together, but most of their time was spent talking about the case. The few candid moments and honest interactions were always interrupted, leaving me hanging and wanting more. I guess I should have been convinced because they had chemistry. However, even that was lacking some more development. There was heat there when they were together, but it wasn’t as explosive as I expected it to be. After all, they did share “a wild, passionate summer” three years before.

All in all, a good start to a series. I am curious about Kyle’s brothers after learning a little bit about their lives. I will certainly be on the look out for the books to come.

Abby suppressed a shudder as that one word speared straight through the heart. When Kyle Dawson had suddenly appeared in the doorway of her sister’s living room, she’d thought she was hallucinating. But there he was, coming to her when she most desperately longed for him, his black brows drawn together in a frown, the already angular planes of his face even harsher in his distress.

Kyle ducked down a little so he was at eye level with her, those intense sapphire blue eyes showing the depth of his concern as he searched her gaze. “Abby?”

“I interrupted the intruder,” she explained, her gaze flitting briefly toward the Sheriff, who’d looked skeptical from the start and was giving her the stink-eye even now. She cleared her throat a couple of times, before adding, “We scuffled. He got away.”

Kyle nodded, his eyes narrowed. “Was that before or after he cut the power to the house and managed to get by the alarm system?”

She should’ve known Kyle would see through her story. He seemed to have almost a sixth sense when it came to crime scenes. But the photo of Emma bound and gagged suddenly came to mind, her concern for Emma’s safety preventing Abby from confiding in Kyle.

“Clearly, he’d done his homework and had been casing the place, watching for an opportunity to break in when the family was out of town,” she said.

That at least wasn’t a lie. The guy had been prepared. He’d known exactly what he was doing. And she’d hazard a guess that he’d also known Curtis was out of town and that Abby and Tyler were there alone.

Speaking of Curtis… Where the hell was he anyway?

Kyle gave her a knowing look. “Abby—”

“I’m sure Mac and the boys can handle it,” she interrupted, inwardly cringing, knowing that the reference to his father was a low blow. But it had the desired effect.

“You heard the young lady,” Sheriff Dawson interjected. “Gentlemen”—he motioned to Gabe and Tom—“please escort Agent Dawson from the premises.”

Gabe took a step forward to obey his father’s order, but Tom put a restraining hand on his arm and shook his head.

“You look like you could use a little air,” Kyle said, gently but firmly taking hold of Abby’s elbow and leading her toward the doorway. She glanced over her shoulder at Tyler, reluctant to leave him after what they’d been through, but she saw Joe sitting beside him, chatting quietly to put the boy at ease.

Still, as great as it was to see Kyle, she wasn’t exactly eager to be alone with him again. Silence had a way of opening the door to some really uncomfortable questions that she wasn’t exactly ready to answer. That didn’t even include the total bullshit she was feeding everyone about what had really happened.

“Excuse me, Agent, but I have some additional questions for my deputy,” Mac said, his tone even in spite of the anger that flashed in his eyes. “And I would thank you not to interfere with my investigation, young man.”

Kyle lifted his free arm to his side and bent slightly at the waist, offering his father a mocking bow. “Wouldn’t dream of interfering, Sheriff.”

Before his father could offer another word, Kyle ushered Abby from the room and out the front door. Abby’s heart began to race as he led her farther into the growing darkness beyond the headlights and flashing blue-and-reds on the various vehicles.

Once they were out of earshot of any of the other officers, Kyle finally released her and turned to face her, hands on his hips. “Spill it. And don’t give me any bullshit about interrupting a robbery. I could hear some of what was going on. I know he was after something you have—or he thinks you have.”

Abby turned her head away, staring into the darkness crowding in along the dense tree line that bordered the property. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I told you what happened.”

Kyle grasped her chin and forced her gaze back to his. “Abby, it’s me. You could always talk to me. Let me help you.”

Spotlight: Too Hard to Handle (Black Knights Inc. #8) by Julie Ann Walker *Author Message, Review, Excerpt and Giveaway*

Message from the Author

Hi everyone!  Julie Ann Walker here, delighted to be talking today about my mad love for men on motorcycles whose hearts happen to be as big as their… ehem… hogs.  (That’s slang for their bikes!  Get your heads out of the gutter, you naughty readers! *wink, wink*)

But seriously, from the King of Cool, Steve McQueen, to Marlon Brando in The Wild One, to Charlie Hunnam in Sons of Anarchy, there has always been something about a guy riding around with rolled steel and a V-Twin engine between his legs.  It sets our hearts aflutter.  And in my Black Knights Inc. series, I try to take those badass bikers to a whole new level by also making them covert government operators.  The series is all spies on bikes, leather and chrome, romance and redemption, action and adventure.  So, what’s not to love?  Nothing!  I guarantee it.

Read on for an excerpt of TOO HARD TO HANDLE.  You’ll see the men of Black Knights Inc. have heart, humor, and everything a woman could want in a man…

Too Hard To Handle by Julie Ann Walker

“Luke Winterfield,” Dan growled. “Under the authority granted to me by the government of the United States of America, I hereby inform you that you’re totally screwed. You made a choice to sell out your country and now you’re gonna face the consequences. Reap the whirlwind, asshole.”

“Nice,” Zoelner said. “Have you been holding on to that one for a while?”

“Came up with it in Bogotá,” Dan admitted, a definite grin in his tone.

“I like it.”

“Thought you might.”

“Really though,” Zoelner went on, “I was expecting some quote from Ted Nugent or Eminem.”

“I can come up with my own material, you know,” Dan insisted. “It’s just I like to give credit to my hometown whenever I can. To make up for the place getting such a bad rap.”

“Maybe it’s because so much bad rap has come out of there,” Zoelner mused. “Insane Clown Posse comes to mind.”

“Hey,” Dan whispered urgently, “don’t say that too loud. You’ll have groups of juggalos beating down your door.”

Zoelner snorted.

“And just so you know,” Dan went on, “what I’ve learned out of this lifetime is you should be proud of where you come from.”

“I’m waiting…”

“Kid Rock said that. Via his Twitter account.”

“And there it is.”

A lot has changed since former Secret Service Agent Penni DePaul last saw Dan. Now a civilian, she’s excited about what the future might hold. As a follower of the series, I was very much looking forward to Dan’s story and I am glad to say that it was what I had expected and so much more!!!

Dan “The Man” Currington has been trying to find his way to life after events that made him drown his sorrows in booze. In the years after tragedy struck, he has been gaining ground and focusing on his job to keep his wits about him. After his last mission, he feels like he’s made strides in his recovery. Although still grieving, he can’t seem to stop thinking about the feisty Secret Service agent he was paired off with on his last mission.

Agent Penni DePaul left the Secret Service after her last assignment. She’s looking forward to starting her new life as a civilian, but she needs to settle a few things first. With that in mind she sets out to find the man that left a lasting impression when she saw him last. She doesn’t know what to expect from the meeting, but she does know that it has to be done.

I loved Dan and Penni’s story! After reading about these two in Full Throttle I was more than curious to know what was in store for them. And with a perfect mix of intrigue, action, humor and romance Julie Ann Walker DID NOT disappoint!

Dan. Dan. Dan. I loved him. He was broody and funny, caring and all kinds of sexy too! I enjoyed watching him moving on with his life–especially seeing him laughing and reconnecting with his buddies. Although still haunted by the events of the past, he showed great strength of character and determination to move forward.

I loved that he was paired with Penni too. Even back in Full Throttle I thought they made a great couple. She was smart, feisty and with a great sense of humor. In the brief time they spent together in the past, she was able to draw Dan out of his self-imposed shell so it was great for me to experience those moments first-hand as this story progressed.

Of course, it helped that they had great chemistry and a well-established connection. The author sure didn’t miss a beat in bringing those two elements to the page. Dan and Penni exchanged many candid, tender moments along with some flirty and heated ones, which for me made the emotional ones that much more poignant. And the sex? Well, let’s just say that my copy is highlighted and bookmarked for a this very reason!!!

Keep in mind that although this is the eighth book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone. However, I do think that having seen Dan and Penni interact in the previous book enhanced my enjoyment of Too Hard Too Handle. But then again, that’s me–I love experiencing that initial connection between a couple.

As with all the previous books, I also enjoyed visiting with the gang–especially Ozzie. I’ve loved Ozzie from the very beginning, but in this installment there was something about him that intrigued me that much more. I hope his story is next, although I will be picking up the next installment regardless. I’ve really come to love these guys and Julie Ann Walker hasn’t let me down yet.

Paige Tyler’s sexy, action-packed SWAT series is back this August with the release of Wolf Trouble! To celebrate this latest release, Corporal Xander Riggs reveals what makes a SWAT member successful.

What characteristics does every SWAT (Special Wolf Alpha Team) member need to succeed?

Well, the first requirement is obvious—you need to be a werewolf. You also need to be able to hide the fact that you are a werewolf. That means no claws or fangs in public. The same goes for running too fast, jumping too far, or lifting too much. If people can see what you’re doing, you have to pretend you’re a regular human. Of course, that can be hard to do when you’re a SWAT officer going up against a bad guy armed with an automatic weapon.

Khaki Blake is a police officer and leads a rather normal life–until a shootout brings about some mighty unusual changes in her.

The Dallas SWAT team is looking to diversify and decide to recruit Khaki into their unit. Tired of having to prove herself on the job at every turn and after a lengthy explanation of the reasons behind her new abilities, Khaki jumps at the chance to join the Dallas team.

Senior Corporal Xander Riggs is not happy with the new addition to the team and he’s determined to keep his distance and focus on his duties. But when Khaki is put under his supervision, Xander comes to realize just how difficult it is to keep Khaki at arm’s length. Chemistry sizzles and tempers flare leading Khaki and Xander to take a good look at the undeniable connection they share.

Now, this is what I’m taking about!!!

A fierce, stubborn heroine–check!
A sexy, broody wolf–check!
Explosive chemistry that makes every encounter packed-full of sexual tension–check!
An in-depth look into the Dallas SWAT world and their members–check!

*Ding, ding, ding* We have a winner!

In this second installment in the SWAT series, Paige Tyler brought it full force. Action, romance, suspense and detailed explanations of Xander and Khaki’s world. The issues I had found in the previous installment were absent in this story, making it not only a worthwhile read but my favorite so far.

I loved Xander. The man was as stubborn as he was clueless, but so very adorable in his confusion. It was a treat to see how he finally gave into his attraction to Khaki, especially when he finally accepted that she was THE ONE. Caring, protective and panty-melting hot!!

It helped tremendously that I found Khaki to be the perfect partner for him. She gave as good as she got while still maintaining a vulnerable side. I liked seeing that contradiction in her. She was smart, independent but yet so very eager to be accepted. Yep, I wanna be her when I grow up!

Although this story was as hot as the previous one, I found that the author took it a step further. This time around it was easy to recognize that the connection that Khaki and Xander shared went beyond the physical. Their interactions ranged from flirty banter to intense bickering all the way through to candid moments and lust filled encounters. These served to showcase how deeply connected they truly were and I was sold!

Another element that improved for me was the plot. I enjoyed the different twists and turns and intermingling storylines. I appreciated seeing the team bonding over their training exercises and extracurricular activities. It lent to a sense of camaraderie that brought home the fact that these individuals were family looking to keep each other and their secret safe. A true pack.

All in all, a fantastic addition to the series. Some action, some romance and a whole lot of fun! I want more.

*I received a copy of this title in exchange of my honest opinion.

Xander had to pick his jaw up off the floor of the training room when Gage introduced the newest member of the SWAT team. He didn’t know what to expect, but it sure as hell wasn’t Officer Khaki Blake. Tall with an athletic build and just enough curves to fill out the SWAT T-shirt, she had the biggest brown eyes and softest looking lips he’d ever seen. She had her dark hair back in a bun, so he couldn’t tell how long it was, but he’d bet money it fell past her shoulders. She smelled way too good to be believed, too—like a slice of frosted spice cake in a uniform.

Shit. He was practically panting. If he didn’t get a grip soon, he was going to start drooling.

He gave the other guys a covert glance to see how they were dealing with her scent and was stunned to see that none of them reacted at all. Why not? His nose wasn’t that much better than theirs. He knew for a fact that several of the other guys—Cooper Landry and Jayden Brooks specifically—could smell a hell of a lot better than he could.

Maybe everyone was so mesmerized by finally getting to see a female version of their kind that the rest of their senses had stopped working.

Gage had left it up to Xander to fill the guys in on what had gone down at the meeting with Deputy Chief Mason while he’d headed home to get ready for his trip to Washington State. While the guys had been pissed that the top brass was playing politics with the team, they’d been intrigued at the idea of adding a female werewolf to the Pack.

They’d bombarded him with dozens of questions, none of which he could answer. Was she as fast and strong as they were? Did her abilities manifest themselves in completely different ways? Would she be as aggressive as they were and able to handle herself in a fight? Were there more like her out there, or was she the only one?

Not all the questions were so general. Brooks wondered what she would look like, Max Lowry wanted to know if she would smell like them, and Eric Becker… Well, Becker just wanted to know if she liked to wear yoga pants. God, that kid had an obsession with those things.

Xander had told them what he knew—that no one except Gage knew a damn thing about female werewolves. And Xander wasn’t so sure how much their commander knew, either.

While Xander was lost in thought, Gage turned the floor over to Khaki, who was currently explaining how much she appreciated the opportunity to be in SWAT.

“I know I won’t be handed anything, but I look forward to proving to every one of you that I belong in the Pack and on the team.” She spoke in a light, lilting voice that surprisingly filled the large classroom. Xander could definitely pick up the Midwest accent, so she probably wasn’t originally from the Pacific Northwest. “I’m not asking for anything from you but a chance to do prove myself.”

The Dallas SWAT team is hiding one helluva secret . . . they're a pack of wolf shifters.

The team of elite sharpshooters is ultra-secretive—and also the darlings of Dallas. This doesn't sit well with investigative journalist Mackenzie Stone. They must be hiding something . . . and she's determined to find out what.

Keeping Mac at a distance proves impossible for SWAT team commander Gage Dixon. She's smart, sexy, and makes him feel alive for the first time in years. But she's getting dangerously close to the truth—and perilously close to his heart...

Yeah baby!! A pack of hot wolf shifters and a whole lot of them!!!

The Dallas SWAT team is composed of a group of wolf shifters living and working among humans. As such, you know there is going to be speculation about their inner working.

In comes Mackenzie Stone, an investigative reporter intrigued about the group of handsome men and their successful streak protecting the citizens of Dallas. She is sure that there’s more to the group of men than talent and good looks and she’s determined to get to the bottom of it.

Gage Dixon is just as determined to keep their secret from spilling out. But try as he might, Mac get under his every nerve–she’s sassy, sexy and smart. A lethal combination when paired with the knowledge that she could be THE ONE.

Sexy, handsome SWAT team members — check!
Sassy, relentless heroine — check!
A sizzling undercurrent of chemistry — check!
Wolf shifters — check!

On the surface this story has the right mix of elements to make it a perfect read. But for me, it needed a bit more world building. Don’t get me wrong the author did a great job of introducing the overall concept and paving the way for other installments in the series. I especially enjoyed how she went about bringing the concept of THE ONE to the page. Different, but still keeping it simple for the reader.

Now, I enjoy my PNR to take place within a contemporary world, but I also like to come out of the story with a complete idea of the world the author came up with. Except for the SWAT team’s extra abilities and the concept of THE ONE, this read as any other romantic suspense with sexy, capable men and the woman who wins his heart.

Other than that, I can honestly say this was a very enjoyable read. The characters were intriguing and shared a palpable connection. Their chemistry was off the charts and the plot had me intrigued until the very end.

All in all, a good start to the series. One I am definitively going to follow!
